VB Express 2005

Hi all,
I just downloaded and installed VB Express 2005 Bata 2. When I ran it and select "New Project" and "Window" app, I get 5 dialog boxes that says:

Title: Package Load Failure
Package 'Visual Studio common IDE package' has failed to load properly (GUDI - {6E87CFAD-6C05-4ADF-9CD7-3B7943875B7C}). Please contact package vendor for assistance. Application restart recommended, due to possible enviroment corruption. Would you like to disable loading this package in the future? You may use 'vbexpress /resetskippkgs' to re-enable package loading.

1. How do you notify the vendor? I can't find a place to do it.
2. I restarted and get the same thing. Also when I close all the dialogs. I get nothing. No forms. I tried adding a form and it seems to work but I can't see anything. Also it asks if I want to discard changes.
3. Disable loading does no good.
4. I can't find - 'vbexpress /resetskippkgs'. Anyone know where it is located.
5. I re-installed vb but did not help. I un-installed it and re-installed it but did not help.

I would really like to VB Express as I have been working with VB since version 1 of the dos days.

Thanks in advance,
Wayne

Hi

This clearly is an error on the installation...
I have a few question though...
1. Did the installation finished properly?
2. Did you install previous builds of VB Express?
3. Didi you try to reinstall .Net Framework 2?
cheers,
Paul June A. Domag

It's a command - open up a command line, change to the directory where VBExpress.exe is, then run 'vbexpress /resetskippkgs'

vbexpress /resetskippkgs didn't help.
uninstalled everything and reinstalled it. The only problem was sql didn't install properly. I am going to see if I can find a download for it.
Thanks a lot for your help. I appreciate it.
I as still using vb 6.0 but this seems like a good way to learn .net.

Nothing seems to help. Downloaded new sql. Got no errors but still getting messages from vb. I found out that it is loading up in vb because I can press F5 and the form shows. I loaded the movie project and got a time out error the server is not responding.
I might have a bad download so I am thinking about downloading vb express again. I have a 56k modum and it takes 2 days (500MB).
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Wayne,

See inline:

You can go to:

http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/default.aspx

And file a report there.

You need to type this on the command line in the program directory for VB Express. It should work once you do this.

Hope this helps.

Wayne,

Have you installed any previous version of VB, VS or SSE before installing VB Express Beta 2 (e.g. CTP, Beta 1, etc). I've seen some reports of package load errors in that case and may be able to point you to a workaround.

thanks,
Paul

Paul,
Yes, I tried to use Beta 1 but could never get it to work. It had problems with sql that I could not find. I am not a database programer so I know little about it and never had any more than what VB 6.0 installed.
I have taken 2 days to download the vb bata 2 again and reinstalled windows xp. I am now waiting for sp2 to be downloaded and installed.
Thanks for taking the interest,

I now have it working. Had to reinstall windows and sp2. Installed vbexpress and got a message that sql could not be installed. I downloaded the sql 2005 and installed it and vbexpress started working.
Thanks to all for your help. I appreciate it.

Glad to hear you got it working, and sorry for the frustration. We're working on making this better.

thanks,

I know you can't be all things to all people. I'm just glad there is someone to help.

Hi.
I get a similar error message when opening an XML file or when opening the options, this time the "Visual Studio Settings and Project Designers Package has failed to load properly". I uninstalled the previous Beta 1 including .NET framework before and I also tried a full reinstall of Visual Stuio Express + .NET. I don't know if this is realated, but editing of XML files is quite broken (editing is as broken as the syntax highlighting so to speak), see picture below.

So is there any solution?

Well, I got it to work a bit better by removing all remains of the beta1 installation (with TotoalUninstall, the usual uninstallation apparently does not remove everything), but now I (only) get the exact same error message as the topic-starter and still have the XML editing problem. It seems that noone knows a better solution than reinstalling the system!?

Great......I've got EXACTLY the same problem. XML editor colour syntax errors. Actually I can't enter a newline in the editor either. Sometimes the editor won't even draw.

I also had the origonal problem posted about the package load error. I fixed this by removing duplicate entries in the Windows\Assembly folder - entries left over by beta 1. (see http://forums.asp.net/897860/ShowPost.aspx)

In my install log I did have an XML 6 error
[MSXML 6.0 Parser: [2] Error code 1603 for this component means "Fatal error during installation.]
I reinstalled (a few times) and this error did go away, but most likely the damage was done.

I'm guessing that the editor problem is releated to left over/duplicate assemblies as well. The problem is I'm not sure which assemblies are for what version of visual studio (I have VS 2003 loaded as well). This may seem obvious with the version numbers and all, but I'm not sure. I'm afraid to start wacking too many assemblies.
I'm going to compare the assemly folder contents to that of a working installation on another machine.

I'll post any (un)successes.

Well I did fix the XML editor problem. There was (another) duplicate assembly.

Microsoft.VisualStudio.TextManager.Interop.8.0

I uninstalled/deleted the MSIL version.

I still have a problem with the SQL Express CTP install not working but I can live with that.

Thanks a lot for this tip, I got everything to work now Smile

You may have duplicate TextEditor Assemblies.

Try this

click START
click RUN
Enter %windir%
ok
Open the ASSEMBLY folder
scroll down until you see Microsoft.VisualStudio.TextManager.Interop.8.0 8.0.0.0
If you have two of these listed then right click the one that has MSIL at the end and "uninstall" it.
Reopen Visual Studio 2005
open a web.config or XML file
It should work properly now.

Good Luck!
