Could be wrong of course, but that's my guess.
The asp.net forums site is so widely known and used I can't imagine anyone wanting to move the forums over to this URL. I think having an "official" set of forums for non-asp.net topics simiar to the asp.net site is a great idea. And they probably didn't want to put that under the "asp.net" umbrella by having it on that site.
forums.microsoft.com is a nice generic URL, and will make a great addition to the microsoft newsgroups. ![]()
Where's the Web dev forum for us ASP.NET monkeys?
Bob guessed it. There is a vibrant community that has developed over @ the Asp.Net/forums site. For now questions about web development should be posted to that site.
In the short term (1-2 months) we'll be creating links to related forums on the Asp.Net site to make this easier.
In the long term (before VS 2005 ships) we're going to be exploring our options on how to best combine the experiences on these two sites without doing anything to disrupt the thousands of users that come back to the Asp.net/forums site daily. Our first target will be making sure that the search in VS grabs content from both locations.
Kevin is also right. There was user demand for a set of forums to discuss technologies that didn't fit under the Asp.Net site umbrella. I'm glad you think its a great idea. <sigh of relief>.
Regarding the Microsoft.Public Newsgroups
I see the two systems as complimentary to each other. However there are features in the forum system that people have been requesting (such as moderation, user profiles, rss feeds, etc) that just don't work well with public NNTP feeds.
One more note: assume all of above also applies to the forums on windowsforms.net-- we know that we need to figure out the same questions there too. Stay tuned for more info...
1) An NNTP reader: this will essentially do what you are talking about Kevin
2) An NNTP server: this will actually provide an NNTP interface to forums data
There is also a third add-in in the works that will provide a listserv interface to forums data for folks who want to work with the forums via email as opposed to NNTP or the web interface.
The forums here at forums.microsoft.com are not running on CS::Forums. The only connection to what is being done here and what we are doing with addins at Telligent is that Microsoft has seen what we've seen (in my opinion) - developers want to choose the way they collaborate with other developers. Community Server (via the addins) will provide that option.
Many of the differences, however, come from requirements we have to host applications at Microsoft. For example: Our information privacy policies for users restrict us from storing much of the richer profile information that you get with the CS::forums and also require us to leverage passport as the login authentication system since your data can only be associated with that GUID. Having said all that...
I'd like to believe that we have a pretty good relationship with the fine folks at Telligent. I love the CS products and I think there will be some good information sharing between the two projects down the line. For example: we added the concept of question attribution to enable the creation of FAQ views into forums and for users to be able to decide, for themselves, if a question has really been answered. I'm hopeful that we'll be able to work that sort of meta-data functionality into the CS::Forums system that will be used by the Asp.Net/forums site down the line.
I would always consider http://www.asp.net as the primary asp.net forums
And
I would always consider http://www.windowsforms.net as the primary windows forms forums. Those site have been there since day one.
These I guess would be everything else.
