Need some suggestions about picking a 64 bit workstation
I'm investigating picking up a 64 bit workstation in the next few weeks. So my question is which would be better, AMD64 or the new P4 6xx series? Has anyone tried the 64 bit sdk on either machine?
Any isses with WinXP 64 (other then the fact it's beta code) and .NETFX64 that could be a show stopper?
Thanks,
Jason
Lois: You're drunk again.
Peter: No, I'm just exhausted 'cause I've been up all night drinking.
Hi
We have been testing both Windows XP 64 for AMD and VS 2005 Beta 1 (building code/apps that runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms) for approx 1 year.
Windows XP 64 for AMD has so far proven to be impressively stable, with very few issues at all so far as our work has gone, it has crashed very few times.
Also VS 2005 beta 1 (I cannot yet speak for beta 2) has also proven to be a great tool for building and testing real 64-bit apps on Windows 64 for AMD.
I therefore would not hesitate to recommend and AMD 64 CPU (I have a 3400+ with 1Gig) and Windows XP 64 for AMD os, if you can still get the beta that is.
Hi,
I think AMD has been selling 64-bit processors for quite a while and hence its a safer choice. I am personally running a Workstation based on Athlon64 3200+ and its been a good experience so far. I would recommend a AMD Athlon 64 based system and make sure you go for the Socket 939 based processor.
And note that Windows XP 64-bit has been released to manufacturing which means that it is no more in Beta:
