Check out the DirectX SDK. It contains a 3ds max plugin, XSkinExp.dle, for exporting to .X format.

I have found that there are problems using the panda exporter with version 7 of 3ds max.

BTW: We have a list of exporters on www.ircomm.net that might help, but most of them you will have to pay for.
