Cn't get VB2005 Express Beta2 and .NET Compact Framework 2.0 to work

Hi, I've got a HP iPAC rx3715 Pocket PC with Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Ver4.21.1088) and a BT-338 GPS receiver & want to write some GPS logging applications.Big Smile

So I've just installed Visual Basic 2005 Express Beta2 (050215.4400) and Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 (Beta2) onto my PC (windows 2000 Pro SP4) with no reported errors, but when I start click start|Programs|Visual Basic 2005 Express Beta2 then File|New Project I only find 5 Templates;Sad

Windows Application,
Class Library,
Console Application,
My Movie Collection Starter Kit,
Screen Saver Starter Kit.

How do I get started? when I can't find a template to build a .NET Compact application? Have I missed something? do I need to install some extra software?
Can you create applications for a Pocket PC using Visual Basic 2005 Express Beta2? or is it crippled in some way to stop you doing that? Or did the install go wrong? I've found some files in \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\CompactFramework but Visual Basic 2005 Express can't seem to find them.

I srearched MS web site and found references to SDK for Windows Mobile 2003-based Pocket PCs, but that says it requires Visual Studio .NET 2003. And the Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK for Pocket PC says it requires Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows XP & Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 Standard, Professional, or Team Suite Editions.

Please help, as you may have guessed, I'm a bit new at all VB2005 stuff!

All I want to do is write some GPS applications on my PC that can run on my iPAC using my blue-tooth GPS receiver.

Thanks
B1zaphod.

Hi,

I found this in the faq:

What types of applications can I build with Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition beta?

Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition can be used to build Windows applications, console (sometimes referred to as "command line applications"), and reusable components. If you want to create interactive Web sites you should use Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition which fully supports the Visual Basic language.

There is nothing written about smart devices. With Visual Studio 2005 you can create smart device apps.

I'm pretty sure you need Visual Studio 2005 Professional or higher to build smart device applications. If you want to give beta 2 a test drive you can order it from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/getthebetas/
