Cannot connect WinXP to Win2000

Hi guys,

I am trying to create a linkup between a Win2000 PC and WinXP notebook via a cross-over cable. I've configured the IP addesses on both systems, ie. 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 respectively.

After restarting the PCs, both seems to be able to see each other by pinging each other. In fact, my Win2000 PC can even access my WinXP's shared folders. However, this is not true the other way round. My WinXP notebook cannot access my Win2000 files, even after entering the correct username and password. It prompts an error "\\192.168.0.1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network name cannot be found.".

One puzzling point is that I am able to add a network drive to my Win2000's folder on my WinXP after entering the same username and password.

So, can someone pls advise what am I missing?

Thanks,
Kevin

Did you check the file and folder permissions for the share on the Win2000 machine? Also, what do you see if you run the command "net view \\machineName" (from a command prommpt on the WinXp machine - replacing machineName appropriately)?

Can you also try the following command from your WinXP machine?
"net use \\machineName\sharedFolder /user:UserName Password"

(replace machineName, sharedFolder, UserName, and Password appropriately)

Thanks for yor reply JonCole.

The permissions for the share folder and files were set properly.

Running "net view \\machineName", I've got "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied." message.

While running "net use \\machineName\sharedFolder /user:UserName Password", I've got "The command completed successfully.".

I believe this has got to do with some authentication issue but am out of ideas on where else to look at. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Cheers,
Kevin

Hi,

I have managed to access the files and folders on my Win2000 PC from my WinXP notebook, by cleaning up a virus which stopped my admin shared folders from being started during bootup.

However, this is intermittent, ie. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Rightfully, when I run "net view \\machineName" at the DOS prompt on my WinXp, I shld get the shared folders in Win2K displayed. But this does not always happen. I wud get "The Server service is not started." or "The remote procedure call failed.". Does this errors refer to the Win2K or WinXP machine? I have also verified in the Services that the Server service is already started and running on both PCs.

Any idea wat's wrong this time?
Thanks!!
Cheers,
Kevin
