Sidebar and Aero

Hi,

What's the relationship between Sidebar and Aero? For example when Aero is off (automatically or manually) then sidebar will be turn off as well? And vice versa?

Thanks.

Hi Eric,

I dont think there is really a relationship or some kind of dependency between Sidebar and Aero. In my understanding, Aero is the name for the new User Interface while Sidebar is an application that is capable of docking or displaying Windows Gadgets. Even if your Aero glass effect uis turned off, you can still run the Windows Sidebar application by selecting Start-> Run->Accessories-> Windows Sidebar.

Thanks Amol.

But I found on a system (lower end machine) that is not capable of Aero the Sidebar is being turned off by default. But on an Aero-capable system the sidebar is on by default. Is this what MSFT's setting?

Hi Eric,

Well I guess it is. It's not that sidebar is not available at all. It's always there and the sidebar application can be launched whenever you wish to. It's just that Vista doesnt seem to start it up by itself when Aero effect is not supported i.e. the machine's display is not Aero capable.

As to not degrade system performance, Sidebar is turned off by default on systems with 512Mb of memory or less . You can always run it on manually: Start, All Programs, Accessories, Windows Sidebar. You can then right cick on Sidebar and choose Properties and check Start Sidebar when Windows Starts.
