Trouble getting Team Explorer in VS 2005 RC1 installation.

I have installed TFS Beta 3. When I installed VS2005 RC1 on the server machine, it has Team Explorer.

But when I did what I actually wanted to do, which was install RC1 on a different machine, it lacks the Team Explorer, connect to team foundation server menu item, etc. Based on older posts on this forum, I installed the Team Foundation Client from the TFS Beta 3 bits to see if this "plugged in" the missing items. The install said it was successful, but I still see no signs of Team features in my Visual Studio.
Thanks in advance for any help,

John Rhoads

Do you have the Connect to Team Foundation Server entry in the Tools menu in VS?

Hello John!

These are the steps I've done to install VSTS RC1 and SQL 2005 September CTP.
We are 8 people working here and the procedure worked great!

NOTE: We worked with VSTS Beta 2 so we needed to uninstall it and same thing with SQL 2005 which was an earlier CTP...

Once this is done, these are the steps:
1- Check Windows Update
2- Install SQL 2005 September CTP
3- Remove SQL 2005 September CTP CD :-)
4- Insert Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite CD
5- Select Custom Installation and remove(uncheck) the last option(SQL Server Express)...since in step 2- we've installed SQL Server
6- When install is finished, and launching VSTS, you'll notice that the Team Explorer isn't available...Close VSTS
7- You need to install the "Team Foundation Client" from the TFS BETA 3 CD
8- Our machines have 1 GB of RAM and while making the installation, we were getting an error of insufficient RAM...Ignore this error message (if you get it)
9- ReOpen VSTS you now see the Team Explorer from the View menu.
10- What you need to do next, and this is only for people that had VSTS BETA 2 installed is *clear* the cache of the "Application Data" folder.
Here is a link of known issues for BETA 3...

11- Once the cache is cleared...you should be able to connect

12- If not, check your Host file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc) and make sure you have the proper IP address for your TFS Server...

13- Save and close the Host file and ReOpen VSTS, everything should be working now, you'll be able to "Add Existing Team Project"
So the trick was to clean the *cache* of the old VSTS Beta 2 and the host file since we changed server for TFS(hence why I say check for the proper IP address)

Hope this helps!
Sincerely

Vince

I followed this, but with SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. Also when it came time to install Team Foundation Client, I got a message saying that I need to remove all pre-release software for it to install. The list of software it gave me included VSTS. What's up with that? Has anyone had any issues similiar to this?

I ended up giving up on this and formating my machine. I then installed the three pieces in the following order:

Team Foundation Client
VSTS 2005 RC1
SQL Server 2005

This seems to be functioning 100%.

Hope this helps anyone else that runs across this problem. Though I hate having to reformat!!

Does anyone know if there is an alternative to removing VSTS RC1? I especially don't want to have to reformat and re-install. Thanks.
