Windows Update and the .NET FW 3.0

Hi All,

Does anyone know if and when the .NET FW 3.0 will be pushed out to Win XP users via windows update? I seem to recall that's what was done when .NET FW 2.0 was released but I haven't seen the FW 3.0 available via windows update yet. Anybody know whats up with that?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

This is from the MSDN Library so my guess that it will be made available end January of begin February

Where to Obtain the .NET Framework 3.0 Redistributable Package

You can download Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 redistributable package from the Microsoft Vista Download Center or from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site.

Note The Microsoft Windows Update site offers only the officially released version of the .NET Framework 3.0; it does not offer beta versions.

If you need to have users install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 from the Internet, do not post the redistributable package on your own network. Instead, direct users to the Microsoft Vista Download Center or the Microsoft Windows Update Web site.

You have to update the windows XP to service pack 2.0 inorder to install the .Net Framework 3.0 that can be installed with Visual studio 2005.

You may try to install the .Net Framework 3.0 after upgrading to service pack 2.0

Hi,

I meant, will it ever automatically be pushed out via the windows updates? Kind of like security patches and so forth--those are automatically pushed out to the end-users if they've set their automatic updates to lookup and/or automatically download and/or install updates. I'm just curious.

No, that feature is for critical updates only. Security Updates or Service Packs for the .NET Frameworks will be pushed through the Automatic Updates though.

Hi,

We are working on posting the .NET Framework 3.0 on Windows Update as a recommended update (meaning it will not be pushed down like security updates, but will be available to users who choose to opt in for recommended updates). I don't know the exact date when it will go live though. In the meantime, you can download the .NET Framework 3.0 from the Microsoft download center - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=10CC340B-F857-4A14-83F5-25634C3BF043.

Thanks! Aaron

Hey Aron,

Our software company is currently evaluating whether to do a client UI in .NET 3.0. The program would be freely downloaded from our website, in a way similar to the New York Times Reader (written in .NET 3.0).

In our own tests, the time and complexity of installing .NET 3.0 would create a prohibitive barrier to installing our own software.

Microsoft must consider this in its decision whether to push .NET 3.0 out. I don't buy the argument about "critical update only" - because I would not call Internet Explorer 7.0 a "critical update" - so clearly, Microsoft is being selective.

For the software companies out here, MS should seriously consider pushing .NET 3.0 out. Because we can't justify using .NET until that is the case... it is really too high a barrier for the end-user, when they are trying to download and install client software.

Best, Charles
