Jan CTP I followed all of the instructions But where is it?

I followed all of the instructions for the January CTP

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1ff0b35d-0c4a-40b4-915a-5331e11c39e6&displaylang=en

First of the credentials were wrong, once I figured that out, I had to figure out to change the networking to allow internet access so I could proceed with the activation of Server 2003.

OK, Now what? I don't see any programs installed other than those that are installed by default.

Am I missing something?

Do I need to do yet another download?

Are the instructions flawed? (Flawed Instructions? Is that possible?)

Enquiring minds want to know.

Hi Terry,

I do strongly agree with you. It seems there's something wrong with the JanCTP of Orcas. I just downladed and installed with heavenly effort, and what I have in front me is win2003 with vs2005 team system named as orcas/vs 9.0 .I dont see any project emplates for LINQ or WPF or WF. I dont understand this mystrey. where am i going wrong? did I download a wrong version? or missed installation instructions.. or what.

Im eagerly waiting for a perfect response to this query..

Thanks..

Well, at least you have some form of visual studio to try out. I have nothing!

I understand this is a CTP and not even beta, so I expect missing and incomplete items but when there is nothing at all to Preview, I call it a waste of time and energy.

Out of sheer frustration, I decided I'd start all over again. I deleted the extracted images and re-extracted the images and decide I would follow the instructions to the letter where I could. Here is what worked for me. Changes to the base Instructions are in Red below: Items 1-7 are pretty straight forward and no changes were required. Changes begin at Item 8.

Instructions

To install, follow these instructions in the exact order shown

  1. Download and install Virtual PC 2004 SP1 (or Virtual Server 2005 R2 )

  2. Download the Base image (one-time only): Save the self-extracting base image VSCTPBase.exe and extract to a folder on your computer. This base contains the Operating system and is common to all "Orcas" CTPs.

  3. Click the Download button on this page to download all parts of the Visual Studio Code Name Orcas January CTP. The first part is a self-extracting EXE and will prompt for the other parts.

  4. Click on the self extracting VSJan2007CTP.exe to extract the file. Extract the file to the same folder as the base. This file contains all the new VS content and will change from CTP to CTP. You will need to read and accept the EULA before extraction proceeds.

  5. Launch the Virtual PC Console using Start|Programs|Microsoft Virtual PC.

  6. Click the New button to launch the “New Virtual Machine Wizard”.

  7. Navigate to the Options page and select "Add An existing Virtual Machine" radio button.

  8. Click the Browse button and navigate to the location you extracted the files to and select VSODec2006CTP.vmc image The actual image name extratced to my machine is VSDec2006CTP.vmc and it seems to be working fine.

  9. You will be prompted for the location of the base image and you should point to the Base01.vhd that you extracted earlier and click OK You MAY NOT be prompted for the location of the base image. If you are not prompted, DO NOT make any changes!

  10. Clear the “When I finish, open settings” checkbox and click OK. This is very Important! If you do make any changes here, the whole install could fail leaving you to start all over! I found that whenever I made any changes at this point my problems would start.

  11. Select the new image entry and click Start At this point you May be prompted for the correct location of the base image. Browse to the location you extracted Base01.vhd and click OK

  12. To logon to the machine, click on Action Menu (Shortcut: Right Alt+Del) on the VPC console and use the credentials above. If the password P2ssw0rd does not work, then delete your extracted images and start over! P2ssw0rd is the correct password for the image downloaded through this link! You should not have to activate this image. If you are prompted to activate this image, then it is installed incorrectly, Delete the extracted images and start over!

See Readme document for important notices and information about the CTP.

Read any additional documentation available regarding WPF, LINQ, or any other CTP related items you may have been working with prviously. The team is working on intgrating these things into one CTP, but it's not all there yet. Remember this is CTP software and not even worthy of being called Beta, features will come and go as the CTPs evolve.

I hope these modified instructions help someone else out there. At least I can play with the future stuff now.
