Active Directory FSMO role change

Hi,

On my primary Active Directory domain controller, if I change the FSMO role to another domain controller (2nd DC) how long will it take for the 2nd domain controller start taking its role, like authentication, login scripts, etc? The reason is, I need to bring down the domain controller for a couple of hours for hardware maintenance and firmware updates.
