Office Live and Onenote, not syncing
I have installed Onenote, and am trying to host a shared notebook on the Office Live sharepoint server. Via IE7, I can get to the files on the site, open them, etc, etc with no problem.
The problem comes when I try to have Onenote load up and automatically authenticate to the sharepoint server. At best, I have to click sync, then type in my windows ID username and password everytime. At worst, I have to close the notebook, and reopen it withhttps://xxx.yyy.zzz/notebook.
Any suggestions on how to get this to log into the sharepoint site automatically? EVerytime I reboot I have to do this- not bad for me, but not an option for users....

Hi Hil,
Can you clarify a couple of your steps for us? When you say "when I try to have Onenote load up", what exactly do you mean? What are your expectations for automatic authentication to Office Live?
Also, can you give us some additional details about what version of Windows and Office/OneNote you are using?
Thanks,
Chris
I have the same or a very similar problem.
I use MS OneNote 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) extensively with a work sharepoint folder. I do not have sync problems with this even though I sync the Onenote files on the work sharepoint server with three different PCs (2 x XP Professional, 1 x Vista Business).
However I have a personal Office Live Essentials account. In it I have created a Workspace and in the Workspace I have created an application which is a Document Library in OneNote format. I have created a new OneNote notebook and pointed it to this folder and then created a large number of pages in my OneNote client. Initially the sync routine worked but as I have put more information into OneNote the sync routine has become temperamental – and I get “waiting for update” all the time. The only way I can restore the connection is to close the Notebook with loss of the recent work. When I reopen the workbook the sync feature works for a while but when I start to add work again the sync feature falls over and I am back to the “waiting for update” message again.
This is a very frustrating problem and I am losing confidence in the Microsoft Live environment as a sharepoint server capable of supporting OneNote notebooks.
The problem does not appear to be due to space contraints because my office live workspace is only showing 150MB used, out of 500MB available but it is possible that the sync is failing because I am working with a lot of scans and perhaps storing 20 or so black and white scans in individual onenote files.
It is not immediately obvious to me how to force my PC to connect to my office live onenote workspace from my OneNote client - at no stage am I asked for a password. However when I log into my office live site with password this action allows my OneNote client to try to sync with office live.
I’d be grateful for any help you can give me.
Hi Jon,
It sounds like there may be multiple problems going on here. For starters, it sounds like you are having some sort of login problem with OneNote. This may be due to cached Passport credentials in Windows.
See this discussion about that problem and give the steps a try to see if that helps. Let us know if it does. Meanwhile, i will have our test team look into the rest of the issues you are experiencing to see if we can get a repro. I searched our known issues and I do not see this recorded anwhere.
And THANKS for the detailed steps and message. This really helps us try to figure out what's going on.
Thanks for this. Having cleared my cached passport credentials I seem to get a more positive login process and I am now more confident that I am getting correctly connected to my onenote files on Office Live.
However my main problem continues. It appears that the sync process between OneNote 2007 and my Office Live workspace fails when I put too many pages in a onenote folder (somewhere near 20 pages at 300-400 K each - giving me a 6MB to 8MB .one file, and as I get near this apparent maximum the sync process fails intermittently, until it fails altogether.
Recently I have not been able to sync my most-used notebook at all. Even when I close the notebook in my client PC and then re-open it I still cannot make the sync process operate. I am however confident that I do have a good connection. I just get a message in the synchronisation window saying "Waiting for Update".
Incidently I have created three more OneNote notebooks in my Office Live account, in three new separate workspaces. None of these have many pages in any one folder of the notebooks and the sync process works .
Have you been able to replicate this problem which appears to be something to do with the size of an individual .one file?
With thanks Jon
Few more questions:
- How fast is your connection speed? Cable modem, DSL, T1, 56k modem?
- Is your notebook set to work offline and only sync when you direct it to? Or is it set to auto sync. To check this, go to the menu File | Sync | NoteBook Sync Status. There are two radio buttons. Which one is yours set to? Sync automatically or work offline?
- When you see the failures, where are they? on the sync window mentioned on the previous bullet point above?
- When you say you have 20 pages, are they all pages within the same Tab?
Our test team hasn't gotten to this yet, but I tried it out and am successfully syncing a file of almost 9.5 kb just fine. Has about 25 pages in a single tab/section of a notebook. But I am on a T1 connection, so that may skew the results.
Also, after you clearned your cached passports, as mentioned above, you are prompted to sign in the next time you attempt to sync. When you type your user name and password, do you check the checkbox to save credentials/remember me on this computer of the sign-in dialog? If yes, you may want to clear your cache again and start sych again from scratch, but this time do NOT check that checkbox to remember your credentials.
Thanks for this.
I am trying this from two locations:
- At home I have a 2MB broadband connection
- At work I am using a much faster university connection
I have tried syncing many times with "only sync when I click sync now" (plus pressing "sync now"), and with "auto sync".I am actually working with several notebooks and usually have OneNote set to "auto sync". Most of the workbooks sync without problem. Two small notebooks with files in my office live account sync without problem. A very large notebook on my work sharepoint server syncs without problem, but one fairly large notebook on office live is causing the problem and the problem only arose as I added more scans to a particular tab.
I don't get a "failure" message as such. However I get the message "Waiting for Update - last sync [several days ago]". This message is in the sync window in the same place where I would expect to see "up to date, last sync [a few minutes ago]".I keep getting this even though the sync process keeps re-trying.
All the scanned images are on separate pages in the same tab. I have created several tabs under a group of tabs. The Group is called Suppliers, in the group are my individual suppliers, under each supplier tab are my pages of scans. Each page is a one-page scanned invoice. One of my suppliers has a lot of invoices. As I add more scans to this tab the sync process falls over.
I have cleared my cache several times. I now do now click "save" my password.
I am getting the same problem with this notebook on each of three different PCs.
I tried to re-create the notebook from scratch thinking there was perhaps a corruption in the notebook caused by moving groups and tabs around. I set up a new notebook. I re-created all the groups and tabs in the new notebook, then laboriously copy/pasted the pages from the original problem notebook into the new one - four pages/scanned images at a time. At first the sync worked on the new notebook but when I got to 20+ pages in a particular tab the same problem occurred - and I now can't sync either of the duplicate notebooks. I was able to get from 18 pages to 19 pages and then to 20 pages by closing and re-opening the notebook each time sync failed. This "fix" was only temporary and soon the sync failed to work at all even directly after opening the notebook and adding nothing new.
Thanks for sticking with this one.Jon
[I have cleared my cache several times. I now do now click "save" my password] ..... SHOULD HAVE BEEN I NOW DO NOT CLICK "SAVE" MY PASSWORD -- Sorry
Hi Jon,
I think we have a repro of your issue. The two things I did differently after your last description was to post large jpgs on each page and also added a separate section within a notebook tab area.
Now that (I think) we have a repro, we'll dig in further to see if there is a work-around. So hopefully you can bear with us for a few more days while we get some traction on this bug.
Thanks again for the detailed repro steps.
Good news. Thanks for this. Jon
Hi Jon,
I did not forget about this. I've got an escalation in on this with the OneNote team. Hoping to get some traction before the end of the week.
Thanks
Hi Jon,
Out of curiosity, how long have you had this Office Live account? Were you part of the Office Live beta before it went "final" in November 2006? Do you recall being migrated to the new service?
Also, can you tell me how much of your storage allocation you are currently using for your business applications? You should be able to go to Home | Business Applications and see the meter on the upper right hand corner of that dashboard.
Thanks!
Hi Chris,
I first had my office live account in December 2006. I upgraded from basics to essentials round about March 2007 - whilst still in Beta. I only started to use an office live workspace with OneNote a few weeks before Office Live came out of Beta and I only experienced the problem (presumably because of increasing file sizes) during the two weeks before logging it on this forum - so after MS published that Office Live was going live. Sod's law.....
I am currently using 160MB out of my 500MB allocation which comes with Office Live Essentials.
Thanks. Jon
We're still looking into this. It is definitely a real issue. We have been able to get multiple repro's of it now, but we don't yet have the cause figured out.
I think it's fair to say that even when we find the cause, it will be a while before we can get a fix out there. Since we're not sure where the problem is yet, it may need to be fixed by us on Office Live or possibly by the OneNote team. Either way, it could be some time before we could release a fix.
The only work-around we can suggest at this time is to not create such large OneNote files... maybe consider compressing the images you are attaching to a smaller size, or putting fewer images in each notebook.
Thanks for this. I appreciate that getting this fixed may take some time. However when you do work out where the problem lies I would however be grateful if you would confirm whether it is down to OneNote, or Office Live. If it is the latter I may downgrade my Office Live Essentials account (and so save some money) until the problem is fixed.
With thanks. Jon
