Orcas and VS 2005 on same machine
Hello,
I have VS 2005 Team Suite German on my PC. It is my production PC. VS 2005 is installed on my local "C" drive.
Can I install Orcas WITHOUT any problems on my local "D" drive? I don't want to run into ANY problems with my VS 2005 German installation.
Or would you suggest that I install the virtual PC version of Orcas? Basically I would prefer the version that is installed on my local "D" drive.
Regards

Hello,
Ideally, new software needs to be installed on C drive. Although VS 2005 and Orcas are tow separate versions and they are designed not to intefere with any other existing version of VS on the same machine. I.e both the versions can sit on the same machine and drive C:.
BUT, as Orcas is in CTP phase till now, so why to take chance as you are working on your production machine.
Just for this putpose we have concept of Virtual Image, which you can download and run on your production machine itself. The virtual Image will run in completely isolated mode, without affecting your existing software in your production environment.
As technology is in Pre-release/CTP form; if it comes with some bugs or faults which may affect/crash your OS or any other softawre, the whole virtual environment (.vhd) is isolated and will not affect your host OS and softwares, as you can discard it any time. This is why Virtual images are used for keep production environment intact from any errornous activity which can lead to a serious problem.
FYI - Correct image of ORCAS March 2007 CTP is availble at this link
