Login failure into Sharepoint Administration site

I'm a newbie with Sharepoint. I setup a WSS server 3.0. I have a couple of sights. I have changed the password to the admin id via Windows password change. I can no longer get into the Administration site with any of my known passwords (past or present). I can log into the sites with the admin id.. just not the administration site.

What am I missing here and how do I get back into the admin site?

Thanks for any help with this

Hi,

You need to do a couple of things. Open IIS manager (Inetmgr) and change the password for the application pool that is being used by your SharePoint Central Administration pool. That should fix your access to the site.

If it still does not, open services.msc and change the password for any sharepoint related service that might be using your admin account.

Hope this helps.

I looked at the application pool for Sharepoint Central Administration and on the Identity tab the security was set to Predefined->Network. I tried setting this to a user ID and group (stopped/started the pool) and then the service was not available. When I set it back to Network it came back to the log in screen. I checked the Sharepoint Admin Service properties and the Logon account was set as Local System account. I tried to define a userid/group (stopped/started the service) and the log in still did not change.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks again for any help!

Hi,

A couple of thoughts:

1. If you reset your administrator password, can you get back to Central Administration site?

2. Can you check the log files on SharePoint to see if it throws any errors?

Since it is the Central Administration site, there are only a couple of things that I can think to look at:

1. Application pool identity

2. Make sure web application in IIS is set to use Windows Integrated.

3. Make sure SQL server also has appropriate permissions for this user.

Can you send out your sharepoint log files?

I'll bet it is a SQL server validation - how do I get in to check that?

If you have rights to the SQL Server, you can login to SQL Management Studio and check permissions on the database or under Security -> Login, check the user account and make sure it has DBO permissions to all the necessary databases - Configuration and Content databases.
