Why does the Central Admin shortcut fail?

For reasons I don't understand, I can't access Sharepoint Central Admin using its advertised machine name (e.g.http://mymachine:27852/). The logfile indicates the following error code: 401 2 2148074254

However, I *can* access it usinghttp://localhost:27852/

Of course, this makes no sense to me. Can anyone here enlighten me as to why this is so?
