Share Data from Public Web Site

Hello.

I watched the demo on sharing data with the public web site and it was very good. However, the example used only web pages that were built by the Office Live web designer. If I opted not to use the Office Live web designer, and deactivated it. Is it still possible to share data with my public web site, even if I'm not using the Office Live web designer? Is there any samples of this? I am about to work on a clients site and need to know this ASAP.

Thanks a million in advance!!!

Charlton.

Hi CDEA,

Currently, you must use the Office Live web designer to implement the data sharing modules.

Mentioned this on another thread...

There is no supported way for you to use the Data Sharing feature once you opt to use a different design tool such as FrontPage instead of the Office Live Web Site Designer. There may be a way for you to reverse engineer a Collect Data module that is added to a page using the Web Site Designer by capturing the contents using NetMon, Fiddler or other packet sniffer, and then add it to a page after you switch to using your own design tool such as FrontPage. Theoretically this would work, but because this method is not supported, there is a very real risk that it may not continue to work with future updates of Office Live.

Thanks, Chris and Matt, for your responses.

I am concerned about this issue. Presently, I use the Office Sharepoint 2007 Designer to build my clients sites. I have been recommending Office Live Premium for each of them with the idea of building applications and private sites for their internal use. Naturally, I am building their public sites. However, building public sites using the Office Live Web Site Designer, is somewhat limiting. Here are some of the drawbacks:

  • My clients want unique headers. To provide this I have to use the work around code to completely change the header. However, this isn't fully acceptable because it create the short blink before showing the page. The alternative is to create a header as the logo and then try to blend it in with the part of the header provided by the Office Live Web Site Designer. This method isn't fully appreciated by my clients either.
  • It appears that the use of javascript files is not supported either. I like the samples that have been given for working with the Business Applications. Why is this function not available for the public website?
  • There are a few more quirks, but I don't need to get into it here!

My take is that if the Office Live Web Site Designer is able to reach the Business Applications, then certainly there could be a way for sites uploaded to Office Live to be able to collect data for and display data from the Business Applications.

Thanks for any consideration that can be given! I will continue recommend Office Live for my clients, but this is something I need rectified!
