Cannot complete Install of Express

Product: Microsoft SQL Server Native Client -- Error 1706. An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'.

Logged as MsiInstaller in App Log.

The install fails with this and two other items in the bos that shows successful install items
SQL Server Database Services
Workstation Components, Books Online, Development Tools

Installed 2 necessary programs;
Windows Installer 3.1 and .NET framework 2.0 redistr.

Any Ideas?

I have encountered the very same error that Michael posted. Can somebody please help us? :( I'm in the middle of project development and I'm afraid I might miss my deadline. :((

It would be perfect if microsoft can has a small tools to remove all history of SQL server installation (no matter beta or not)

From another post in the forum (by First I extracted the files in a separate directory:

SQLEXPR.EXE" /x:c:\sqlexprtmp

Then I searched and executed “sqlncli.msi”

I clicked on “uninstall”.

After this I rebooted the computer (in German: “reboot tut gut”) and installed (this time successful) sql-express.

This fixed the problem for me as well. I can tell you what causes the problem (or at least how to reproduce it)

Setup a WindowsXP machine with NO Service Packs.

Try to install SQLEXPR.EXE

It will fail because SP 2 is not insalled.

Install SP2

Try to reinstall SQLEXPR.EXE

It will fail of the SQL Native Client.

Following the workaround in this post and uninstall SQL Native Client

Reboot

Reinstall SQLEXPR.EXE and it works fine.

Excellent. I had the same problem - caused by trying to install it on a machine which didn't originally have a valid SP2 update - and your solution solved the problem.

That is exactly the problem. With luck Miscrosoft will now fix it, because it really puzzled me until I read this thread.

These threads might provide a solution, but given that Expresss is meant to a response to things like MSQL, would'nt it be nice if a) they got it right first time, b) had sorted out by now.

The advice given above worked great for me. I tried to install SQL server 2005 express but during the installation I got the message that SP2 was a requirement.

After I did the SP2 update and tried to continue with the install I got the error. I did go to add/remove programs and removed the "Native Client" and then the installation worked with no errors.
