Segoe UI

Please make the lower case i not a circle dotted lower case i...reason is its so hard to read at lower sizes...vertical 2 pixel dot is now a 1 pixel dot for the lower case i ... this also looks ugly on large scale type... if you dont want the dot in the lower case i readable then you might aswell make the upper case I look like lower case l...

... was suppose to go here...pressed new thread thinking it was a reply button :) weird i know....
anyway i mentioned that if you examine thiner lighter fonts the "dot" on the lower case i isnt really a square its more of a vertical rectangle so i think 2 pixel dot is better then one you can always make the lower dot gray...

VG, would you please attach a picture of what you're talking about? I don't quite follow your request, and I'm also not sure in which version of Segoe UI you're setting your issues.

Thanks,
jeff

the lower case i for segoe ui 2 problems when a text is scaled up it looks terriable in my opinion cause its a circle...but the worst thing is the default windows font size for the lower case i . : characters. If you look at the lower case i for example you will see a 2 pixel white space between the dot and the line its so hard to see it. In Tahoma that dot in the lower case i is 2 pixels and easier to see same goes for : . etc you can see this in the newest build and release like in this screenshot http://windowsdesktopsearch.com/public/temptest2/index.php?image=e79988100739e78e72f7b90d13d42ac4
bottom right corner... look at the letter i between the dot and the vertical line below the dot there is a 2 pixel white space in tahoma there is 1 like it should be in my opinion cause when you study great fonts like frutiger helvetica lighter versions the dot is more of a vertical rectangle not a perfect square or a circle unless its a round version, i dunno i think the circle for i and : . is ugly and i dont see the benefit of it either make the dot in the i 1 pixel black and the bottom one gray as a subpixel or mak it 2 full pixels so I can read it...know what i mean now? hope that was a good explanation

I've looked at the screen grab, and even with the font displayed against a textured background the dot over the i is completely legible - I don't think anyone would mistake the lower case i for another letter.

Segoe UI is designed to work as a UI font dispalyed using ClearType at 8, 9 and in limited cases 10pt - that's 11, 12 and 13ppem (pixels per em) for those that are interested. The dot is legible at these sizes as well as larger sizes.

The square dots, in the fonts you mention contribute to their datedness - compare against modern sans-serif fonts like Adobe/Apple Myriad or Erik Spiekermann's sans fonts, or Luc (de)Groot's - almost all have round dots.

Cheers, Si

well iv asked most of my friends and they can hardly see it aswell... i think belw the dot should be a sub pixel like a 50% gray or something mabe lighter, i def dont like the dot, if im having these problems then wouldnt it be worse for someone with glasses? the circle dots take away from a solid color they become even lighter cause of the round edges, i think its a mistake. but i guess thats ms call...

Well we use "hinting" to bulk up problem areas in various characters at small sizes (no need to redraw outlines) - in fact we're doing some extra work on some of the punctuation where ambiguity can be a real problem under grayscale (not ClearType) - but no plans to do this on the i or j where there's no ambiguity.
