sql installation hanging

Please can someone help me. I tried to install the web development, and ticked all the boxes. Vis.web.dev. and msdn installed ok (apparently) but the SQL Server 2005 express is stuck. According to the website this can happen and one should wait ten minutes. I've been waiting about two hours! I tried "Cancel" but it said it would finish setting up what it was on! What the hell do I do now.

Hi Jess:

Can you go through Visual Web Developer Maintenance Mode (via Add/Remove Programs) and see if "Add optional components" is enabled? If it is, select it and try to add SQL Server Express again.

When you see SQL Server Express appear to hang, can you also monitor Task Manager to see if the setup (sqlexpr.exe) is still running? If it does hang again, please include your SQL Express logs - they can be found under %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOGS. Please also include your VS setup log found in %temp% (dd_vsinstall80.txt).

Good luck!

Hi Ravenna,

Sorry about the panic. I think it's sorted now, but I'll explain anyway.

It turned out that my firewall had taken exception to something although it's logs do not elaborate as to what it was. The two hours, or so, of the installation hanging was evident from it's log, however. I did indeed have to end the application. After this there were only 2 MSSQL items in my Add/Remove Programs. I removed them and tried to reinstall it again via Visual Web download. But, although it seemed to have installed ok, most of it was in a weired directory, not the SQL Server one in Program Files...

So I removed the (now) 4 MSSQL items in Add/Remove, deleted the spurious directory (leaving it intact in the Recycle Bin), cleared %temp%, and moved everything under the 'proper' SQL Server directory to somewhere else, renaming the top part of this new tree - just in case. Finally, I searched the registry and found no relevant references to "MSSQL"; and I rebooted. Then I realised that in the 24 hours I had originally spent downloading all this stuff, I had also got the SQL Server as a 'download, install later' file. Marvellous! (very slow broadband, you see.) So, I executed that, and now, I think it has all successfully installed - and to the right directory.

So I'm ok now - at least as far as installation goes. It's a shame that Microsoft didn't include the same download option for the other VS Express editions.

Anyway, thank you very much for your reply, and for reading this waffle.
