Unable to edit forms or datasets in Vista 32-bit
I installed Orcas Beta 1 Professional on my Vista Ultimate 32-bit machine. When it was completed installing, I ran it. It started fine, and then I created a new WinForms application project, which succeeded.
When I try to view the form designer for Form1, I get the following error:
Microsoft Visual Studio
The service Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.ISelectionContainer already exists in the service container.
Parameter name: serviceType
OK
When I try to create a new dataset component in the project, I get the following error in the Error List, and I can't view the designer.
Warning 1 The custom tool 'MSDataSetGenerator' failed. Could not load type 'GenerateOption' from assembly 'System.Design, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'. C:\Users\Kyle\Documents\Visual Studio Codename Orcas\Projects\OrcasApplication1\OrcasApplication1\DataSet1.xsd OrcasApplication1
I've tried running Orcas as administrator, but that doesn't help.
Any ideas? I've got another computer reformatting right now with Vista 64-bit (and then I'll try 32-bit) and I'm going to try it over there when it's complete, to see if it's machine-related somehow.

After several hours of fussing around last night, I finally got Orcas beta 1 running on another, freshly-formatted computer with Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Didn't manage to get it running under Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I had to run the setup a couple times on 32-bit Windows - te first time, it installed the first two items (I think up to .NET Framework 3.5). Then when installing Orcas it encountered an error and everything else in the list showed a red X. I rebooted and ran the install again, and it went all the way through successfully that time.
On that computer, everything is running fine now. I'm still attempting to figure out what's going on on this machine.

Guys,
I posted this in another thread but forgot to post it here as well. I was able to "fix" the issue a few days ago by going into Control Panel and uninstalling Orcas, then going through the Orcas readme and manually making sure there were no Orcas files left in the Add/Remove Programs (which there weren't.).
Then I installed again and selected the full option (the first time I believe I selected Custom and only installed C#). After that install, it worked just fine.

No dice.
Did a full uninstall as per the Readme instructions on the DVD.
Removed all Orcas-related artifacts I could find.
Restarted machine.
Re installed with the "FULL" option from the DVD (no setup or installation errors.)
"ISelectionContainer already exists in the service container."
So basically, the Beta is just a text editor with intellisense right now. I can write cool console apps and class libraries if I want, but no real application development at this time.
would LOVE to hear some more suggestions on how to resolve this. Seems like it would be a simple fix. (Without formatting the drive, if possible, too many tools to re-install).
Eric.
I'm on my third day fighting this beast.
Re-installed again (out of desparation), ran WISE Registry Cleaner (fixed over 2200 errors), really thought that wold be it.
Reinstalled (FULL), but still no change.
I'm not desparate enough to start manually manipulating the registry or deleting .dll files out of the GAC(yet) but if anyone else has any suggestions, I would really love to hear them.
All my development and testing hours are locked up trying to get through what seems like a very simple issue to resolve.
Please advise.
Eric.
ISelectionContainer error on VISTA32 Enterprise,
Anyone located a cleanup tool?
What about these 3 patches? They install on Vista, then uninstall after 2 reboots. They are not a solution for me...
This is only my 4th attempt to install this. Wish I could get a response from the setup logs that keep going to MS...
