Posting times

Are the times placed on each posting in GMT? It would be nicer if it used my local time, given that I specified my time zone in my profile.

For example, it's 6:29am my time, but the posting says 2:29pm.

Hi Brian - Unfortunately, this is actually a hard problem... since there's no way we can deduce your time zone without you adding it to your forums profile, and we want to keep the "signup form" for forums as short as possible.

How we're thinking of addressing this problem is by changing to relative dates, e.g. "20 minutes ago ", "3 hours ago". Would something like that work well for you?

Justin,

I would prefer the first option - adding it to your forums profile.

You could keep the signup form simple by defaulting to GMT for new users. However, if advanced users want to custom their timezone, they should be able to by visiting Edit Profile once they have logged in,

Good suggestions. To set expectations, there's a lot of other features we want to add to forums in the next year, so we'll have to weigh this against other work we want to do. (Turns out that adding stuff to the profile, due to how our internal systems are currently designed, is harder than we'd like it to be.)
So we'll definitely add your suggestion to the list of possible future features for forums, but don't be surprised if we end up doing the cheap solution first (N minutes/hours/days ago) and wait a while to build the more expensive solution (profile time zone).

Thanks for the feedback!

I understand the resource constraint tradeoffs.

Incidentally, I looked for an enumerator for time zones in .NET and didn't find one. Hmmm...
