I asked the font folks, and here's their response:

We do consider the existing design normal
There are two styles of normal lowercase "g" glyphs. One is what we call single story as in Verdana "g" and the other is what we call "spectacle g" as in the Consolas design. Both styles are very common, and we considered the spectacle "g" to better suit the Consolas design.
We have no current plans to add additional styles of "g" to the Consolas fonts. We may consider this for a future release

Hello.
I love this typeface, except for the lower case g and the circles used for lower case i and full stop etc characters... the good thing about courier new was that your able to see the full stop etc characters better, from a programming perspective I hate that you now cant see the full stop etc as much as you could with courier new... wasnt this designed for programming?. Id like a lower case g thats not a "spectacle g" because i fing it annoying to look at so do most people...just cause Google uses it in their wordmark dosnt mean its trendy, What id like to see with the lower case g is have it look like verdana lower case g but the top right corner is round with-out that tip on top right, dunno the proper term to describe it. I also hate the spectacle g on paper... i know you guys think that people arnt printing things anymore cause of blogs but i print code for articles etc and that spectacle g is really making it hard for me to make it a default font, Im still sticking to monaco unless its does get changed or a second version is made. btw I love LOVE the cap M and W, great font but those 2 things i listed i really hate. small tweaks it be nice to have 2 versions. dunno...just a thought
