What would cause error 1203?

I set up a new Team Project, then added a solution to source control. Then I attempted to check in. The IDE immediately vanished. This error comes from the event log:

The solution was simple - turn on WebClient service. (I'm surprised it wasn't turned on as part of setup and that apparently no mention was made of the need to turn it on in the setup docs.)
