Actualy, the SideShow platform is extensible, and you can make SideShow compatible with many existing devices.

Unfortunately, Vista/SideShow info is a bit misleading... no phones shipping yet have SideShow support. i-Mate has been working on their own driver longer than anyone else, but even they have yet to ship a device with SideShow support (though the Ultimate line linked above will be the first... unless someone else beats them to it).
MS just slipped in the announcement that eventually all current/future Windows Mobile devices will be SideShow compatible (WM6 for sure, and probably WM5 too). So, eventually Vista's description of SideShow will be correct... it will be in a lot of mobile phones... it just isn't in any today.
