WDS causing dozens of dwwin.exe and drwtsn32.exe errors

I have a problem that started recently that has me stumped. Nothing has changed on the system except for the installation of a logitech webcam and video vegas (which has SQL Server Desktop Engine as part of it). Also, Software Distribution Service 2.0 apparently installed itself (See it in system restore). Basically the system will be running along, and all of a sudden it will start acting sluggishly and programs will not open. I uninstalled WDS about an hour ago and the problems appear to be gone. Occasionally on boot up I’ll get this error:

Windows Logon UI encountered a problem and needed to close.

After the sluggishness inevitably begins, there will be dozens of dwwin.exe and drwtsn32.exe instances in task manager. Shutting them down will sometimes yield these dialog boxes:

DrWatson Portmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Windows Search Protocol Host Has encountered a problem
MS Windows Search filter host has encountered a problem

I cannot start new programs. I’ve also tried rebooting, then immediately doing a system restore, but System Restore just tells me it was unable to restore and no changes were made.

The only constant error I’m getting is the logon ui and the MS Search. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Desktop Search to no effect. Chkdsk /r revealed nothing wrong with the hard drive. Having Outlook 2007 B2TR running seems to accelerate the occurrence of the problem, but the problem still occurs even if outlook isn’t running.

I’m attaching my hijack this log and the logs from the event viewer, but I haven’t figured out what is wrong. Any help or suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

From the app log, this issue does not look like it's directly related to Windows Search. Multiple programs are crashing with this issue.

If you can send the crash information back via Watson and post the assigned bucket id, we can look at the crash dump and try to determine the issue. From the looks of it, drwtsn32 is also crashing, so I don't think you will be able to report these issues back.

Seems you are correct - I tried a few more tests and the problem appears to be with the logitech quickcam software, not WDS, even though WDS was always the first thing to crash.

Thanks for your help!

hello,

I've been experiencing the same problem in the last few weeks as discussed by the person who initiated this thread. I would like to know how was that fixed, and if the error was, if not completely eradicated, lessened.

Big thanks,

Sam

Hi, if i could get any help with this it would be great. I think i might have deleted my dwwin.exe file by accident. Whenever I go to try to search for informaiton, right in the middle i get a error message that occurs in the middle of it and it closes the search. This also happens with other things like Disc Cleanup and when i go to switch files on my Windows Media Player to get songs from my other music player. Anyone got any advice about how to fix this or where to download the dwwin file again? Thanks and appreciated.

Try and do a repair on your windows install from the WindowsXP setup CD.

Hi,

I experienced the same kind of problem that was in fact emphased by Kaspersky Anti virus (everything was working find without this anti virus).

The service originating the fault was: c:\program files\common files\logishrd\lvmvfm\LVPrcSrv.exe.

I just put it in manual start and stopped it. From there everything came back to the normal.

This logitech service was installed by the manufacturer (ACER). There is an integrated web cam on the laptop.

This is also happening to me. Very similar to the above person, I just installed Logictech drivers and boom...

Anyone aware of a solution other then uninstalling the drivers? Maybe an updated set of drivers?

With refernece to this problem of dwwin.exe fail to open is happening across all programmes, i do not have any web cam on the system and this still happening since SP2 was installed with IE 7 updates. so if there is any one who knows what is causing this please let me know, had rebooted system from complete fresh operating system and still get the same problem. Had to do a new reinstallation of operating system as when unistalling IE 7 this crashed the system and backup did not work.

Had the same problem. Go to www.logitech.com, click on Support + Downloads, then Troubleshooting, then enter "clean install" in the search text box and click Search. Select Answer ID 620 from the list "Tutorial: Clean Install of Logitech Camera Software". Follow the steps, being sure to go to the Knowledge Base article referenced in step 2.b. This should get you past the problems.
