I've the exact same issue under Vista RTM. After installation of Vista I used the Indexing Control Panel to move the index from C:\ProgramData\...\ to D:\Search.

Unfortunately that disk died shortly afterwards and the index was lost! Having installed a new disk and re-creating the necessary directory structure (e.g. D:\Search\Search\Data\Applications) I get the error specified by the previous poster.

I've also attempted to change the registry values SetupCompletedSuccessfully and MustRecover at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search, as recommended by some feedback on various newsgroups to no avail!

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Dean

Dean, do you have config files in that folder?

Search\Config\msscolmn.txt
Search\Data\Config\gathrprm.txt
Search\Data\Config\schema.txt

Also you don't have to recreate anything under Application, service should do it automatically given SetupCompletedSuccessfully is set to 0.

Try to reset your WDS to it's default settings from WDS' control panel. If you are on Vista, it's under the Indexing Options. See if that takes care of the system catalog generation issue.

Also make sure that you downloaded the latest WDS 3.0 from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917013.

Another thing that you want to try is to stop the service by opening up a command prompt (please run elevated if you're on Vista) and stop the service by typing "net stop wsearch". Delete your index files "%AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows" on XP or "%programdata%\microsoft\search\Data\Applications\Windows" if you're on Vista. Then go to the advance options of WDS/Indexing Options and rebuild your index. This will bring WDS/Vista Search back to it's default setting.

Let me know if that fix the problem.

The windows search service failed to start right off the bat. At the end of the installation, I get an a error saying it can't be installed on this system, and to check the kb917013.log.

The log says "wsearch service failed to start, check application/system event log for details".

The event viewer gives me the two errors I posted initially.

I have no available options or tabs in the WDS control panel. It just says indexing is not running.

Are you running SP1? if you don't have that, please install SP1 while I'm trying to duplicate your problem on this side by installing WDS on non SP1 XP. Also, you did try to install the same WDS language as your OS, correct? Have you try to uninstall and install this again?

I'll post back when I find anything.

It doesn't appear that I have any of the Search\Data\Config\*.txt files, but I do have Search\Config\msscolmn.txt. Is there anyway to force the search service to re-install itself under Vista so everything works again?

Thanks,

Dean

Try to rebuild the index when you have WDS installed. If that doesn't solve it the do these steps:

  1. Stop Indexing service "cmd: net stop wsearch" and check in TaskManager's process list that SearchIndexer.exe was really stopped.
  2. Delete %SystemDrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows (Vista) or %AllUsersProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows (XP) folder with all its files and subfolders.
  3. Delete the following registry keys:
    - "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\Applications\windows"
    - "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\CatalogName\windows"
    - "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\Databases\windows"
    - "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gather\windows"
    - "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gathering manager\Applications\windows"
    - "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\UsnNotifier\windows"
You'll have to change reg key ownership and change permission first.
  4. In registry in key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search" switch "SetupCompletedSuccessfully" subkey to "0" - you'll have to change reg key ownership and change permission first.
  5. Start Indexing service back "cmd: net start wsearch"
  6. Wait until "SetupCompletedSuccessfully" subkey switch back to 1. If it's still "0" after 5 minutes, it means the setup is failed again.

Let me know if this works for you.

David,

I have a dual boot configuration.

XP32 on C: partition and XP64 on D: partition

I realized I had WDS version 2.6.5 installed in 32 bit on the c:

Thinking there might be a conflict, I logged in to it to unistall it and got an error message " The updated could not be removed because newer updates are installed. Please remove the newer updates first."

This was attempted after removing 3.0 on the 64 bit op.

Anyone has any idea why it is not finding the keys?

As it turned out, whilst installing a fresh copy of Vista on another machine I copied the Search\Data\Config\*.txt files to my laptop and it magically started working again!

If you don't have those config files then WDS doesn't seem to be unable to successfully rebuild any indices...

Cheers,

Dean

David -
I have Vista Ultimate, and wsearch just stopped working, Outlook will not open. I initially thought my antivirus was the culprit with outlook.

Does your solution above apply to me? When I get "The specified module could not be found." this is a concern to me. Do I need to reinstall Vista? If your fix pertains to this situation, how can I change the reg key ownership? Thanks.
