Windows Vista Sleep Problems on a Laptop

I have a brand new (less than a week old) Sony Vaio VGN-TXN27N laptop with 2GB of RAM. When I close the lid and then reopen it the display comes back but all programs either hang (Office software) or will not open (iExplorer) and when I try to shut down it again hangs and requires a manual shut down with the power button. Any suggestions as this about kills the usefullness of the laptop if it has to be shut down and restarted everytime.

This may not be helpful. But I think I have the same problem. 1 month old Vaio SZ440. BEhave the same way you describe when lid closed and reopened. Wonder if this is a Sony issue. Will update this thread if I find anything.

Nope, not only a Sony problem. Having the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 6000. My model is more than a year old though.

I have a Vaio VGN-SZ2XP and upgraded to Vista Ultimate. Putting to sleep simply logs off. I have just read this is to do with the NVidia drivers.

Same problem for me. I have a Dell XPS M140.

I have been able to track it down to the HD restart. When the PC is placed in Sleep Mode, the system shuts down the HD to save power, but is not able to restart it when it awakes.

Not sure if there is a setting for this, but it is really annoying

Same issue here. New Inspiron XPS. Nvdia driver update didn't solve the matter.

Have you tried the nvidia beta driver - their is not one for my pc but there may be one for yours.

I read that these solve the problem - you could give that a go.

I'm having a different sleep mode problem with my Acer 5630-6018 laptop (using Vista Home Premium) - whenever I put it in "Sleep" or "Hibernate" it "wakes" itself within 10 - 30 seconds. Anyone have any suggestions? It's driving me nuts... Argh. It's a new system, only a month old.

Pretty old laptop - Acer TravelMate 540.

Have same problem and an additional one - after 10-15 minutes of use it simply hangs (no response at all, even Ctrl-Alt-Del)

I believe it has something to do with Vista's power and heat management (at least my laptop is pretty hot at the time it hangs). WinXP on the same system works fine.

Hi folkes,

I have a desktop which does not wake up correctly after "sleep". The hard disk would come on but the screen remains blank for hours. If I reboot, the Windows Vista detects improper shut off. I'm using a NVidia FX5500 AGP card. Of course, it is not a major concern for me 'cos I have disabled the sleep mode in Vista but the similarity to laptop's sleep problem is interesting.

May it is due to the OS?

I did notice that this was posted a while back. I have a dell with the same problem. It seemed that when I disabled restore points it stopped doing it.

Here is a trick that "supposedly" might be a workaround on your system.

Go the the command prompt under administrator mode.

Type powercfg -h on

This turns the hibernate function back on the system. There is also a command to see what power options are available on your system It's supposed to say hybrid sleep... mine doesn't and won't work anymore.

Did you ever find anything out?!?

Have any of you tried the hotfix for the sleep problem: KB933872?

My new Fujitsu laptop was losing it's DSL connection information after coming out of sleep. It works OK now after fix installed but now does another bazaar behavor of turning the touchpad back on, that I have disabled when it comes out of sleep This is shades of Win 98, for cryin out loud!

I have a new Panasonic R6 laptop and have the same problem! My laptop will wake up from sleep mode perfectly ok unless I close the lid and let it sleep for a few hours... then... blank screen... wont wakeup!

Anyone got a fix?

Same problems here with Vista on an HP laptop. Sometimes it won't wake up from sleep, other times it wakes itself up while the lid is still closed. Major pain! I can't even find any info on the web for troubleshooting this problem. I've disabled sleep mode and have the laptop shut down completely whenever I close the lid. I hate it but don't see any other choice other than leaving the laptop plugged in all the time.
