Windows Live Messenger hangs

I have installed windows live messeneger 8.1 and worked with it for a while with no problem. Then the messenger did not start when windows started eventhough the setting was to run at windows startup. Today I applied the latest updates through microsoft update (VS2005 SP1 and etc...) and now it does not run at all.

I checked the process list and I see that the process is loaded (msnmsgr.exe) and for every time I attempted to run the messenger again a new process is initiated.

After uninstalling the messeneger, and reinstalling it, I still have the same problem.

I even reinstalled MSN messenger 7.5 after uninstalling the live messenger and when it runs, it shows the messenger window but right after that it hangs.

I have no clue what could be the cause of this. Can anyone help?

This is occuring on one of my PCs at home, I tried the following,

completely removing all Java programs,

uninstalling and reinstalling Windows live Messenger 5 times

renewing my IP address

After each of these actions I shutdown and restarted my computer but still no luck.

I tried this in 'normal mode' and also in 'safe mode with networking' ,

msnmsgr.exe shows up in task manager but the program will not start.

Will appreciate any help.

same here since yesterday, i have it sometimes. most times it works after a few days again.

the thing is, that messenger 'unhangs' when i kill my internet connection. i think it is something with the messenger server communication. but it is very irritating indeed.

If you have a router, try restarting it. I have D-Link DI-624 router and restarting it solved my MSN 'hang' problem ( I don't know yet if this is a temporary or permanent fix). This only started happening after I downloaded the latest router firmware. Also, I don't know if this is related at all but I switched my router's wireless security from WPA2 to WPA since my mobo's on-board wireless (Asus A8V-E Deluxe) doesn't support WPA2.

I had that very problem too, and restarting my D-Link DI-714P+ worked. Live Messenger is now starting again!

Thank you very much!

Thanks for posting this information. I've been trouble shooting this problem all day. Rebooting the D-Link DI-624 resolved this issue.

Thanks again.

Justin in my case when I connected the PC, with the Live Messenger connection problem, directly to my Cable Modem I was able to connect, which meant that it was my router causing the problem. I reset it by unplugging it and using a straightened out paperclip to reset it, there is a tiny hole in the back that shows 'reset'.

After that all was well. I have 4 computers on my home network and had problems just on one of them. By the way this problem re-occured about 2 months later and I solved it the same way. No problems since. Hope this helps.

No I don't think so but if it does re-occur it is the way to solve it. You said after connecting to your modem it worked great, you did not say what happened after you reset your router and you reconnected your pc to it, did it work and is it continuing to work?
