Popfly Gadgets Just Stop... Or sidebar crashes

Hi,

I've created a few very simple Popfly mashups which continuously update (every 30 second they get a URL and display the results). I've installed them as gadgets on my vista sidebar.

Sometimes, for reasons I've not been able to figure out, they just stop updating. Can I tell if there has been some error they couldn't recover from or something similar?

Second, my sidebar has now crashed. It never crashed before I installed the Popfly gadgets. I've had them running continuously about a week now and I've seen the crash perhaps 3 times. When the sidebar comes back it claims that one of the sidebar gadgets or my outlook calendar gadget was at fault. But, as I said, before I installed the gadgets from Popfly I never saw crashes.

Let me know if you want me to collect more data on the crashes (and what you want me to collect) or the stopped gadgets.

Cheers,

Gordon.

Don't suppose your using a 64 bit OS? As silverlight doesn't have a native 64 bit version.

If your using a 32 bit OS the most likely problem is that the mashup is waiting for a call to a web service to complete as the UI is executing on the same thread it can cause issues. Some of this will hopefully be fixed in the updates today.

If you could share the mashups and post the name of it here that would be a great help.

Hi,

I'm using Vista, 32 bit. So I don't think that is the problem. One thing I just realized: this doesn't happen to my mashups that are on my office computer. But my office computer never goes to sleep. My portable and my home machine I often hibernate. It happens on both machines. That plus your guess of a failed internet query make a lot of sense.

I think both of the mashups are currently shared (they are very simple). Look for the "D0 DAQ Rate". It is a very simple gauge that shows the rate at which data is pouring into the DZERO particle physics experiment at Fermilab (http://www-d0.fnal.gov). I'm supposedly in charge of this system, so this is a nice way for me to monitor it (i.e. quiet computing, or whatever they call it).

Cheers,

Gordon.

Interesting I'm not sure of the behavior of the sidebar when it comes in and out of hibernation, will look into it.

Nice mashup though! Smile

Of course, it doesn't happen 100% of the time... If I figure out anything more I'll let you know. -Gordon.
