Fail to install, not even .NET 3.5
I downloaded VB orcas and start the installation. The download of about 1G was finished. The installation started for a while then an error appear. Since .net framework 3.5 got error at installation, nothing was installed. Could any body help? I already send the reports that prompted to microsoft.
I am using :
AMD athlon 64 3000+
1G ram
XP professional with SP2 updated
Install the software using a user with administrators right
After the failure, I install .NET 3.0 and restarted. Then run the installation, but still fail on installing .NET 3.5.
Can you zip up the logs and send those to me so I can have someone take a look at them?
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Paste %temp% into the address bar
3. Zip up the contents of all files titled "dd_"
4. Email them to westonh AT microsoft DOT com.
Uh... He did say he already sent the reports, didn't he.
The automatically reporting dialog you see in the end of the setup sends the generic Watson report back to Microsoft and it’s anonymous. We won’t be able to trace it back directly to Anthony’s failure instance. Therefore, we still need him to provide the log information so we can debug the issue.
Thanks, -Annie Wang, Microsoft.
I am sorry to hear that the return messages are so generic. When I am testing Beta software I would be more than willing to have the error messages sent directly to MS with my name on them. I have nothing to hide and would not be trying Beta software if I was not willing to work with the MS developers to get the problems worked out.
Maybe something like that could be added to the EULA or special sign-up. Then we all could benefit from the issues that occur during these testing periods. With as many different configurations as there are in the MS/Intel world, I can only imagine that debugging field issues is a nightmare. Just something to consider in the future.
Answered to the original reply as well...
If you do have pre-RTM version of the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 installed on your box, then you need to remove them 1st before you install .NET Framework 3.5 Beta1. The reason for this is that the .NET Framework 3.5 Beta 1 release contains the servicing bits (patch) to RTM version of the .NET Framework 2.0. If you have the previous version of the FX 2.0 installed on the machine, then the FX 2.0 patch won't work as the expected product it supposes to patch (.NETFX 2.0 RTM) is not available. Hope this helps. Annie Wang, -Microsoft.
Bob, thanks for your suggestion. We are treating privacy with the highest regards and thus we are collecting the feedback anonymously. We will consider your suggestion for our future CTPs and Beta releases. Thanks, -Annie Wang, Microsoft.
I just had the same issue trying to load it on an unpatched VM of Vista. Unpatched, no patches, base install (Sometimes ya gotta spell that out). Can I download the .NET 3.5 Beta1 and install it first before starting this install? I will do some more testing in the mean time... it takes hours for this install though
Ok, folks, I've read all the issues, fixes, and other links. My problem is that I CANNOT uninstall .NET Framework 2.0. It won't let me! I says that I have other programs dependent on this and won't tell me which program it is. Any ideas?
Can you please also check if you have .NETFX 3.0 installed on the box? If you do, you will not be able to remove .NETFX 2.0 unless you uninstall NETFX 3.0 1st. I assume you have the pre-RTM version of NETFX 2.0 installed thus why you want to uninstall it. If this is not the case, please provide me more information on what you want to achieve so I can better help you. Thank you in advance.

Kim, you should be able to download and install .NETFX 3.5 Beta 1 1st before you intall the Express SKU Beta 1. You need to make the VM Vista you have is the RTM version though. NETFX 3.5 Beta 1 only works on the RTM Vista and not the pre-released version. Thanks, Annie Wang, Lead Program Manager, Deployment Technology Group, Microsoft.
Yes this is the RTM Vista version and not the pre-released version. I downloaded the .NETFX 3.5 Beta 1 and it fails at the same spot. The problem is definately in the Orcas install. Vista and installs give us all a headache on .NET as well.
I gave up on it. Instead I am just going to install it on a XP VM for the person who is running Vista. They are just trying to check out Orcas to see advantages vs disadvantages of moving to it.
Addition on 5-22-2007. I can install .NET 3.5 on the XP VM but the Orcas install now errors right at the start. I have .NET 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 installed along with 3.5 now. Could this be preventing Orcas? All those other versions of .NET were installed by using Windows Update. Can you give me a scenario that works and I will just wipe and reload XP again with that scenario? Is there a VM you already have with Orcas on it so we can just check it out on that VM?
I don't know about Windows XP but when I tried to install the Orcas Beta 1 release on Vista, I got an some error about incorrect parameters being passed to Microsoft Installer. It failed on the .net 3.5 framework. I simply installed the framework on the DVD first and everything else installed perfectly.
The .net 3.5 redistributable installer is found in this path on the Beta 1 DVD:
[cd]:\WCU\dotNetFramework\dotNetFX35\x86\netfx35_x86.exe

Nathan, you hit it perfectly. Apparently the 3.5 install on the cd is different from the 3.5 install you download from Microsoft. This worked perfectly on my test system as well as on the developers system that was having the issue initially. My problem is that I was downloading the .NET 3.5 beta from the website.
Install .NET 3.5 off the cd THEN start the Orcas install.
I hope this sheds some light for the devs of Orcas on an issue to be resolved.
Once again, Thanks Nathan!
