SQL DMO - Backward Compatibility Components Redistributable

I need to update our applications install program so it installs the latest SQL DMO.
I've downloaded the "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components" MSI fromhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D09C1D60-A13C-4479-9B91-9E8B9D835CDC&displaylang=en.

This MSI will not install on Windows 98. This is surely a problem? Client machines running Windows 98 can still connect to SQL Server 2005 so surely I should be able to install SQL DMO on a Windows 98 machine as well?

Thanks

Sorry, but this is not supported.

This is disappointing and causes several issues for users who wish to make their SQL Server 2000 applications SQL Server 2005 compatible…

If SQL DMO 2005 does not install on Windows 9x then this makes certain features of our product unusable.

This is a chicken and egg scenario. If I distribute SQL DMO 2005 our customers running Windows 9x will not be able to run our application. If I distribute SQL DMO 2000 our customers running Windows XP/2003 will not be able to run our application on SQL Server 2005.

You can only have one version of SQL DMO installed on your development/installation machine due to the fact SQL DMO 2005 installs into the same folder as SQL DMO for 2000. Therefore it is difficult to create an installation that will install one version or another version depending on the OS present.

For existing applications this puts us in a very difficult position. We can’t upgrade to SQL SMO because this is not supported on Windows 9x either. We can’t include SQL DMO 2005 as hundreds of our customers will have applications that simply no longer install as they are not up to date on operating systems.

So we are left with SQL DMO 2000 which means we will not be upgrading anyone to SQL Server 2005 unless there is a workaround.

I regret that this is causing you grief. However, Windows 98 was never on the plan for SQL Server 2005, and there will not be a workaround for this issue abailable. I wish I had better news for you...

Ok thanks. I kind of guessed that would be the case.
