FSMO Roles

Hi Team,

This is a basic question on FSMO roles. I have a Domain named abc.com and I have child domains named ft.abc.com and gt.abc.com.

Will the domain wide role just be in one domain controller (anywhere in abc.com/ft.abc.com/gt.abc.com) or will I have seperate domain wide roles for

parent domain and each child domain.

To put in short, will the domain wide role be available under one dc in abc.com, one dc in ft.abc.com, one dc in gt.abc.com or will there be just one domain wide role for entire domain tree.

Thanks

Santhosh

Hi Santhosh,

The Domain Role (and the Schema) is forest wide - i.e. only on one DC per forest.

The RID Pool Manager, Infrastructure and PDC roles are domain specific - i.e. on one DC per domain.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Does it mean, I will have only One RID Master for a Domain Named "abc.com" irrespective of # of child Domains I have under abc.com?

Yes. And each child domain will have its own RID Master.
