The Tabular Data Stream (TDS) unsupported

Hello,

Today I have been setting up a box with Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 on Vista. After that installed, I decided I would install Katmai on their as well. I uninstalled the 2005 workstation components and the Katmai installed worked fine.

When I try and connect using Management Studio, I get the follow error:

TITLE: Connect to Server

Cannot connect to BIGBLUE.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)

For help, click:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=233&LinkId=20476

BUTTONS:

OK

In the event log, it says:

The Tabular Data Stream (TDS) version 0x73090003 of the client library used to open the connection is unsupported or unknown. The connection has been closed. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

The only post I could find is this:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1821403&SiteID=1

However, the server and management studio was installed at the same time. The only thing I can think is that Orcas is causing problems.

If I run SQLCmd then I get login failed. If I try to login as sa then it works, however I cannot login via Management Studio with sa.

Also having a problem starting SQL Express 2005 now, says it cannot find the master.mdf (its not in the directory).

2007-07-27 20:43:14.82 Server Error 2(error not found) occurred while opening file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if necessary.

Any ideas?

If you need any more information then please let me know.

The Readme for Katmai is completely silent on Orcas, of which a reasonable conclusion is that this combination is not supported. Does the docs for the Orcas beta say anything about Katmai? Judging from the message about master.mdf missing (that is what error 2 means according to NET HELPMSG), your Katmai installation has messed up the Express installation from Orcas big time, maybe because Orcas did not install its part properly. I would scratch the machine, reinstall Orcas, and install Katmai on a second machine. Thanks for your reply.

SQL Express is now alive again, I used Previous Version feature of Vista to store the DBs (first time I have used it) so thats OK.

Readme doesn't mention anything.... Sad

Virtual machines are great, but if I get asked a question it means booting up the VM, waiting for it to load etc etc. Plus if I have already got all my work open my machine can't handle the extra load. So I decided I would right it out on my machine and give it a full run, if it kills it then I can wipe it.

As SQL Express is now working again, I have installed Katmai in a VM so if I need to use it I can connect to it. Guess I will wipe my machine in time for the next round of betas.

I think you are right about Orcas. I have experienced a similar problem since installing Visual Web Developer 2008 on a box with Katmai.
