Problem with new installation of Visual Studio 2005

I have recently got a new development machine. I previously build the websites on VWD 2005. I had AJAX installed on the old machine and it is also installed on the remote server. I had added the ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll and Microsoft.Web.Extensions.Design.dll to the bin of the website Im working on + these are referenced in the web.config in order to make AJAX work. Anyway, I have installed Visual Studio 2005 with VS SP1 on a new server. When I try and open a site I had previously made, Visual Studio hangs and in the message bar it reads... Adding reference to System.web.dll which appears to loop round unsuccessfully. This happens when I try to switch to design mode. Other symptoms include it being very slow to load all the controls and hyperlinks. I am connected to the server via RDP but this shouldnt make a difference and the server is very powerful so its not to do with performance. I hope someone can help.

Thanks

I am having the exact same problem. I have a VS2005 C# web application. I have AJAX 1.0 installed. I am opening a file locally and its terribly slow to open a form in design mode. The status bar is showing "Adding reference to System.Web.dll..." and it does this VERY SLOWLY for EACH CONTROL on the form in design mode. One control is displayed on the form... then pause with the adding reference message... then next control is shown.. .then pause for status bar message, etc... This is a major problem. It makes working on the forms unbearable.

I am also experiencing this problem following the installation of Visual Studio SP1. I have uninstalled AJAX 1.0 and VS 2005. I have re-installed VS from scratch without appliing SP1 and this problem no longer exists...apply SP1 without or without AJAX 1.0 and the problem is back.

I have not seen much information on the issue...and nothing official from Microsoft. Have you seen the thread at http://forums.asp.net/p/1064275/1535838.aspx. It may be worth repairing the .NET Framework 2.0 installation.

This is also recently occurring on my system, and I am not using AJAX yet. I recently started working on a pre-existing project from overseas, and all source code that they send me, causes my Visual Studio 2005 instance to do the same thing whenever I switch from Source to Design mode. It takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to render all of the controls on the page. I have just recently installed SP1 as well.

Clean machine with VS2005 then Source Safe, then SP1, then Ajax 1.0 installed in that order. Same problems as everyone else. Local projects don't see to be affected (I built the AjaxToolkit Source with no problems and was able to enter design view quickly).

None of the workarounds/fixes/etc seem to working. Another co-worker with a fresh install is having the same issues. Someone at MS needs to speak up...

Repairing the .NET Framework 2.0 installation has fixed the issue for me. Following the installation of SP1, I went to Control Panel and opted to repair my installation of .NET Framework 2.0 and now I have a fully functional dev environment...with SP1 and AJAX!

Let me know if this works for anybody else.

Didn't work for me. I ran it 3 times...

Repair of VS.NET did not help anything either.

We finally found the problem. A dll needed FullTrust. We found this by excluding all dlls and adding one by one while testing Design view. We then used "caspol" on the dll to configure it and it now works like normal again.

What a pain.

For the guys out there, working on Microsoft. Please, skip Vista. Skip Team Foundation Server. Skip anything you are working at. Let's concentrate on VS.NET 2005, ok?

I'm earning money using VS.NET 2005. Money for food, cigaretts and beer. Right now I cannot afford beer, neither cigarrets or food. Because VS.NET 2005 is not actually working.

So, I have a .net solution. I worked on it before reinstalling XP and deleting Vista. It worked ok. Now I have reinstalled XP, VS.NET 2005, Ajax, service pack for VS.NET and it tooks about 30 minutes to switch from code view to design view for an aspx page. "Loading designer".... "Creating control X".... "Creating control Y..." and so on and so on and so on and so on.

I uninstalled VS.NET service pack: the same behavior. I put it back: no change. I repaired .NET Framework 2.0; i deleted all the refferences, no change. What should I do? Install linux, web sphere, java j2ee? or java beans? or what?

Sorry for being rude, I'm feeling very frustrated after a night trying in vain to make it work.

What I will drink tommorow? Deffinitelly, not beer!

I am having the same problems, but found a work around. The problem for me only showed up when I was working on pages in a non-local folder. I copied my files to a local folder on my c drive. From there I edit them, and then I copy them to the distant directory when I am done. It is a serious pain in the butt, but it is a lot faster than waiting for everything to render in design mode from the distant share. I hope MS fixes this soon.

Okay,

Here was MY Solution / Problem...

Switching between Source / Design Taking AGES!!!!

Environment : ASP.NET 2.0 on Windows XP / Visual Studio 2005 SP1 (Yes I have Ajax.net installed)

In my situation i develop DNN (DotNetNuke) modules / Private assembilies. My Web projects are user controls that get injected into the DNN framework. They DO NOT NEED a web.config file as they only run as part of a larger web application. However, this being said, a web.config gets "automaticly" injected into my project. When this happens switching between source and design view task forever.

The Fix: (for me in this environment).. Delete the un-nessary web.config in my project.. Now i'm popin in out of source / design... no problems.

Why does is happen? -- I don't know, however i am curious.

Also, how do i stop the injection of a web.config when i don't want one?

I got exactly the same problem after installing a new hard disk in my laptop; i think i found the cause and the solution.

when you open back an existing project, that project maybe use a component that was not installed back. in my case it was the paypal component, in addition of reisntalling that component i had to reinstall the framework .net 1.1 (because that componsnet use it)

i completly forgot about that componend when i reinstall, its by looking in the web.config of the project that i found that.

now it works great,

hope it helps
