displaying custom commands & filetype

Hello-

I currently have a custom top-level menu, but only want it visible when certain filetypes are opened.

I have considered simply restricting the custom commands to fire if the file type of the active file is the correct one, but believe this proposed approach is significantly better.

Any help on achieving this would be greatly appreciated.
