JULY CTP (WORKSTATION COMPONENTS FAIL INSTALL)

AMD ATHLON 64-BIT

WINDOWS XP PRO X64 EDITION

SQL SERVER KATMAI X64 BIT INSTALLTION (JULY CTP)

I've been trying to install the WorkStation components from the JULY CTP. I previously had the JUNE CTP installed. The entire instllation of the database engine and integration services went fine. The workstation components failed. After this failure, I removed the JUNE CTP workstation components and rebooted the PC. I attempted to install JUST the workstation components and the install failed. I then UNINSTALLED all SQL Server components. ALL SQL 2005 and SQL KATMAI. Another reboot. On the 3rd attempt to install just the Workstation components, the install again failed. Here's the error (summary.txt)

Hmmm, something is still dirty on teh machine and it thinks the sql 2005 tools or the earlier 2008 tools are there, hence the "upgrade" messages.

If this is a test machine and you can take some risk, and you've really uninstalled everything, make sure HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Microsoft SQL Server isn't in the registry, make sure c:\program files\microsoft sql server isn't there on the hard drive, and of course before that make sure add/remove programs shows no sql server components.

I removed the registry entries and SQL Server directory. Still no luck. I'm just going to rebuild this PC and start over.

OK, good luck with that and sorry it's not easier.

My guess if you nuked those things is that the MSI registry isn't cleaned up. Unfortunately I don't know of a tool to clean this up.... Maybe someone else will jump in.

One of my team mate also faced similar issue.

Do you have Visual Studio installed on the drive other than C or not on the same drive as of SQL Server?

Not sure whether the workaround works for you.

Workaround : Copy the devenv.exe.config from the installed location of Visual Studio to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe.config

You can report this issue through MSDN product feedback center by selecting “Send Feedback” menu item under “Community” Menu in SQL Server Management Studio. You can also file bugs directly on http://connect.microsoft.com/sqlserver/feedback which will help you to track the status of the bug.
