Download / Install page is BS

according to http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/future/downloads/default.aspx (at the bottom) we are to 'click Setup.exe' -- there is no such file on the disc image. It is ridiculously complicated to try out orcas beta 1. I need VS C# (express?) and Linq. also: this forum's post new thread page does not render properly in Opera. Text box is 1 px wide if you don't disable the style.

Have you burned the image to disc? There is a setup.exe right in the home directory. You can try the web downloads if you are having trouble with the CD install.

I have the same problem: there does not appear to be a setup.exe file on the DVD. The only visible file is desktop.ini. I have explorer set to show all files. In viewing the DVD properties, I see that there are 626M of disk space used, which seems to be about right, but where are they? Also, I'm new to Vista. I thought that I would just run setup.exe from the command window, but I can't find one (in fact, with all the problems I'm having with Vista--and I'm a computer professional--I'm amazed it was ever let out, but that's a separate issue).

I have downloaded the large 3 GB orcas image. There is no setup file nor is the disk bootable.

I've tried the same thing. I also downloaded the vcssetup.exe file, but it only directs me back to the website to download the orca file.

How do you get the setup.exe file out of the img file?

From the Visual Studios 2008 beta 2 Downloads page, I have copied some of that information here:

  • To burn the image directly to a CD or DVD, you will need to install 3rd party software that is capable of understanding and burning image (img) files. Most popular CD and DVD burning software such as Nero and Roxio provide support for burning images..
  • Follow the vendor-specific instructions to burn the image onto a CD.

Some software burning programs allow you to "burn" to a folder instead of an actual recordable CD or DVD. This might allow you to install it that way since you should see a setup.exe file there.

    I hope this helps.

Download a product called Daemon Tools - http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php

This is a free CD - DVD emulator. Once you install it you can point it to the .img file you downloaded. Your windows explorer will now think that the .img is actually a cd or dvd and you can treat it as such. Just go to the new 'drive' and either click on setup.exe or right click it and autoplay. I do this quite often with beta software that I don't want to waste a cd on. I am running XP with SP2. I don't know how this will work under Vista. Also, if you are running Vista, remember that it runs under the least privilege model and you may not be able to see or run things without elevating your user status.

Hope this helps. Just remember 'Programming is an art form that fights back.
