MSDN Server keeps timing out!

The MSDN Server keeps crapping out, folks! How are people supposed to get their work done in Visual Studio when MSDN keeps crapping out, givne that Visual Studio users depend on MSDN for basic documentation!

It (Visual Studio's dependence on MSDN for basic documentation) is utterly frustrating in this situation and pushes me to hate Microsoft even more than I already do.

I am experiencing the exact same issue when attemtping to access the main site, subscriptions page, and subscriptions login, to name a few, and from multiple POPs in geographically diverse locations (Toronto, Chicago, etc.)

What's going on, folks?

To address documentation being only online, no it's not. You can install the MSDN documentation locally through the MSDN library, provided with Visual Studio. I think if for some reason you don't have the install disks for the documentation I beleive that you can download it from the website to install it. The installation is about 1.6 gb, but it is well worth the space for anyone who needs or wants to search the documentation regularly. MSDN Library can be downloaded here (4 CD images).

We do take seriously the hit to developer productivity when the site has performance issues. Today we had a back-end dependency on a system fail that has not failed in the past and we thought we had a solid redundancy plan in place for it.. The code was not asynchronous in how it handled the situation and so we are fixing that ASAP. Again apologies for the situation, we are working on it and it is mostly mitigated now.

As of midnight last night (US PST), system stability appeared to be much better, but the Ops Teams continued to monitor last night and is still doing so today.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Working from India. MSDN servers are not accessible. Get Server Too Busy message or the browser times out.

This issue was the result of some deployment activities earlier today. It was corrected as quickly as possible.

And now it seems to be back down again. I've been trying off and on for 2 days to download some subscriber downloads that I require for a development project, and I cannot. There is no down time warning on the main page, there are only notices here after the fact. What is the deal?

Hi Tim:

Yes we are aware. The team that owns the parts of the system that appear to be down has been notified.

You may not believe it, but I am as frustrated by this as you are.

The good news is that we are working on some very broad Subscriber improvements that will reduce some of the system complexity that has been the apparent cause of this unscheduled downtime and likely some of the earlier ones as well. That wont be ready until probably the very end of the year, though.

So, when is the server expected to be up?

Things appear to be back up now on my end. Thank you for the update.

Most of us here are developers of some sort. We all know what its like to have a bad code day. Things break. We get it, and if you keep us informed I think that you will find MSDN subscribers as a whole are accomodating about it. Even some sort of "updating content" notice would be quite useful I think. Glad to hear improvements are being looked at!

Thanks for everyone's patience on this latest round of issues with accessing Product Keys and Subscriber Downloads for MSDN and TechNet Subscriptions over the past week.

Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 9/12/07) around 3PM PST the root cause was finally identified and a fix implemented. It was an obscure issue to identify and was not impacting all users. There is still some related work for Microsoft to do to make sure a similar situation does not occur again, but a fix has been implemented and the site functionality should be restored for all users.
