Whenever a timer job definition is edited by enabling or disabling it, following error gets recorded in the event log.

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

This also happens when I run 'stsadm -o sync' from the command line.

Because of the above errors, I don't think that some of the timer jobs are running successfully.

What makes this happen? Is there any cure for this?

Changing the SQL Server authentication mode, as per instructions in the following KB article, resolved the issue.
