SharePoint and FaceBook

It’s great to see a SharePoint Forum entitled Social Computing, well done that man.

In my opinion Moss2007 is well positioned to bridge the communication gap within the organization. I can already see Moss making a huge difference in the workplace and I’m sure it’s already influencing the way people make decisions and communicate ideas / business practices.

Correct me if i'm wrong but we’re now seeing an unprecedented user driven evolution of company Intranets beyond their usual document management and content management requirements. With the advent of Facebook, SharePoint is well positioned to become the business driven FaceBook of the company Intranet and for the amount of time I spend on Facebook that’s no bad thing.

To date Intranet systems from a variety of distributors have been business process driven, finally it’s nice to see a product that also engages the user and delivers something interesting beyond a forum, users are after all the lifeblood of the business, aren’t they?

So come on all you company CEO’s open your eyes to the benefits of inter-organisational Social Networking tools and help radicalize the way people do business.

And come on all you IT managers, let SharePoint breath, don’t be scared of Mysites and let your users help influence the way your intranet grows. SharePoint is ‘collaboration’ after all.

Andrew,

Well put and the only thing I would dissagree with (and mind you i am a FaceBook user) There is alot of good things in facebook.. there are also alot of thngs that will make large corporations laugh at you if you brought up some of the features that are offered via Facebook.... I like the wall to wall.. thats your WIKI feature in my eyes...I also like the fact that you can create SIG's and finding or meeting people from other deptarments (imagine these are scattered thoughout the country or world) I would say i have my short list that is on the WishList for what I want to see SharePoint to become. Im seeing social networking branch off in many ways inside and outside the corporate walls. Lawrence Liu has done a bunch of posts and has a couple coming up on the SharePoint Team Blog... I have also done a few of these on my blog... Keep sharing bud

Andrew,

Good post, I too see a big move in this area and currently working in education I can see a real need for an 'approved' Facebook where the schools have access to information for security, pastoral and monitoring.

PS

hope your enjoying Aus

Bob, Andrew,

True, all Facebook functionality in an organisation would be a little scary, although fun....

Feedback from my clients in Western Australia is mixed regarding social networking. I’m currently deploying SharePoint07 at a technology Greenfield site and their keen as mustard to use Mysites whereas established companies appear to be more hesitate preferring to revisit social networking functionality when they can identify a ‘Business Need’.

From what I can gauge when you mention the term ‘Mysites’ organisations automatically see road blocks to employee productivity rather than the opposite and with all the negative press FaceBook and other social networking tool have received recently you can’t blame them.

To continue my rant I’m also finding that the person who would see that ‘Business Need’ for deploying Mysites (a CEO for example) isn’t best privy to the functionality available and/or misunderstands the business benefits thus unable to ascertain any advantage that such a product would offer their organisation.

An afterthought I wonder what the people at Facebook actually use for an intranet? SharePoint maybe?

Ps. Thanks Andrew, Australia is treating me well thanks. Looks like i’m missing out on some good SUGUK meeting though

Hi,

I've recently added a del.icio.us plug-in to my Facebook site and would love you see this functionality appearing in my SharePoint mySite.

For those who are new to del.icio.us imagine being able to store all your favourites in one place and being able to apply a categorization to each bookmark for easy retrieval. Now take the Facebook plug-in and imagine being able to share this information with your friends.

Take a look at your Favourites and ask yourself if they could benefit other people in the organisation? Think of all the time you've spent searching for this information, maybe you could share that 'Fix', 'How to' or ‘Favourite SharePoint Blog’ by publishing these links to your Mysite and I’m not talking about a 'links WebPart' here folks.

I would love to see a mapping within IE allowing you to TAG a favourite’s link with metadata categories then for these links to appear in your SharePoint Mysite. It would also be cool to see these links appearing in a ‘colleague tracking' page allowing your colleagues to see what you’ve tagged. Maybe these links could be targeting somehow as I guess some links would be more useful than others, I guess an organisational wide metadata schema could be adopted here.

Thanks
