Actually, MVP stands for "Most Valuable Professional" in the world of Microsoft communities. You can read more about the MVP program at http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Where exactly have you seen the MVP tag been used inappropriately?

You can check my public MVP profile at

In general if you go to https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/communities/mvp.aspx you can find all MVPs in a certain product category that have agreed to have their profiles publicly visible.
