Astoria on Orcas Beta 2

Given that Astoria is not coupled directly with Orcas - when can I get an install of Astoria for the Beta 2 release of Visual Studio Orcas ... or, better yet, can I just use the Beta 1 install on the new release?Smile

Bottom line is that Astoria represents 90% of my interest in Orcas right now, and my Beta 2 install will sit idle and collect dust until I can install Astoria on it.

Unfortunately the Astoria May 2007 CTP for Orcas Beta 1 won't work on Orcas Beta 2 (the install will probably run but that is as far as you'll probably get; the actual Astoria runtime won't run, as it depends on the Entity Framework bits that are not installed by the beta 2 setup).

We will ship a CTP of the Entity Framework that will work in sync with Orcas Beta 2 sometime in August. After that we'll look into this; if there is enough demand we may at least release a refresh build that is beta 2 compatible. I already got many questions and saw a couple of posts in the forum about this, so it looks like it will be necessary Smile

Please keep us all posted when addition versions of Astoria are released... I've got a lot of things cooking that are going to work with Astoria that I'd like to move forward into VS 2008 B2.

Thanks!

I'd second that -- after upgrading to beta2 I have several stranded projects that are unable to compile or move forward.

I would also like to see an update for Astoria with VS2008 beta 2.. the project i was working on will have to pause until then ..

The entity data framework will be compatible with Orcas beta 2 probably at this end of this month (that's what the team of the EDM framework said on their blog).

What about Astoria compatibility with Orcas beta 2 ? A lot of people are waiting for the compatibility of Astoria with Orcas beta 2 and being able to work with Astoria and EDM beta 2 for the end of this month with Orcas beta 2 would be really greate !

Thanks in advance ...

Ok, so here's my problem. Orcas Beta 2 is a go-live license. This means I'm knee deep in code that I need to write. I'm at the point where I have a service that I need to expose to multiple endpoints. This service is pulling data straight out of a database. The "old" way of doing things would be to fetch data, stuff the data into some serializable format, and then cram the data out on the service pipe.

Astoria does all of this for me. Right now I'm encountering a problem where I can't get around the circular reference issue with attempting to serialize a LINQ to SQL object (despite the data context being in Unidirectional serialization mode...).

This leaves me with two (ugly) options. I can either wait until Astoria comes out, or I can create yet another model that has custom serialization rules just so I can deliver data over POX. There has _got_ to be a better way to deliver data-driven services to people than creating two models.

If anybody has gotten around the circular serialization reference problem in LINQ to SQL, I would really appreciate hearing about it.

Hi,

Not sure what the ask is...are you saying "come on guys, release a beta 2-compatible version of the Astoria CTP", or is it something else? if the former, hang-on, we're looking into this, we'll have news soon. if the latter, could you elaborate more?

Thanks

Yes I just wanted to know if you will make soon a new version of Astoria compatible with Orcas beta 2 like the ADO.NET team at the end of this month.

In light of the recent release of the ADO.NET Entity Framework to VS 2008 Beta 2 - when can we expect to get our hands on Astoria for Beta 2 ... I really, really need this. Everything else I'm doing is running on Beta 2, and someone actually asked me, "Do you know what would be the best way to create a cross-platform XML data service would be?" ... of course I said Astoria Smile

Did I mention that I really need this? Smile

We're actively working on this. I think we'll be done in less than two weeks, give or take a day. So hand in there, we'll be ready soon Smile

Hi, I'm Benjamin, from Avande Spain.

I'm going to expose a third Edition of LINQ Conference from .Net Community of Barcelona ( http://www.bcndev.net ) on 09-27-2007 18:00 PM. ( In addition, I report to all people that BcnDev.Net will organize a Silverlight competition in Spain. http://desafiosilverlight.bcndev.net/ ;-) )

In third edition of this conference I planned to show LINQ to Objects, LINQ to XML, LINQ to SQL and Entity Framework, but, in addition, I planned to expose Jasper and Astoria Services.

I need to know if Astoria Services for Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 will be released before of this day, or you suggest me to download Orcas Beta 1 to expose this part of conference. But I think that this will not produces the same impact on assistants... I prefer to show it on Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2.

Please, reply me...

Hi Benjamin,

We'll have a refresh of the Astoria CTP that's compatible with Beta 2 any day now (we're almost done), definitely before 9/27/2007.

HiPablo,

I'm running a demo of Astoria on Thursday to a bunch of people and I'd like to to do it on beta 2. What are my chances? Slim I guess!
