Using Microsoft Fingerprint Reader for special applications

I bought a Microsoft Fingerprint Reader (it has a USB connection), and I was planning on setup a 'public' PC and use it to identify workers in my company on an application I've developed, by using their finger to get identified, rather than typing a password.

Unfortunately, the device doesn't have information on using it for other stuff, like my idea... I can only use it to be identified during startup.

I'm still using MS Access 97 (even though we moved to Office 2003), but could use Access 2003 if this makes a difference.

Any idea/suggestion is very welcome.

Google is a wonderful thing.

Doesn't look like there's an official SDK or API, but the following third-party site purports to offer an SDK that works with the hardware you refer to:

http://www.griaule.com/page/en-us/grfinger_fingerprint_sdk

That said, the site looks a bit amateurish and I'm not sure whether I'd trust their tool to corporate/secure data without intensive testing. But if your company is still using Access 97, I doubt security is the #1 priority here. Smile

Great tip, Jason! I guess I should've gone straight to Google instead of MSDN

I took a look at the site, even though I kept getting an error while the pages were loading, I was able to get to the Success stories and found one from a company in Mexico! I contcated them and they shared their experiences.

The application for the fingerprint reader is a kiosk were "union workers" can get some personal information (paycheck electronic receipt, for example), so even though it's not a high security issue, we want to keep them kind of confidential...and since most of them have very little knowledge in using PCs, we thought it would be a good idea to us the reader. These applications are running on Lotus Notes, but I don't see much of a problem on implementing the Griaule solution on it.

Again, thanks for the tip!
