Vista OS wont' play or edit AVI (Media Player or Movie Maker)

Vista won't play or edit AVI

The AVI runs on our BattleTech Firestorm Windows 2000 virtual reality simulators, and on my Windows XP.

Just gotVista on a new PC; AVI won't play (message claims it is missing a codec).

Need to edit the AVI for the barker video here in Denver a little, was hoping to use Windows Movie Maker.

Tried to down load three other products (Media Player Classic for example) with no luck.

Interesting that the player knows so much about the file, but can't play it.

If Microsoft Movie Maker won't deal with AVI on Vista OS, will be happy to purchase a AVI editor for Vista OS if anyone has any good suggestions. PCAcer Aspire AST690-UD214a

You probably need the IV50 codec on your Vista system. It came with one of the software installed on your XP system. Can you let us know the filter graph formed on your XP system when playing this file from GraphEdit.

See here: http://www.updatexp.com/codec-iv50.html

Can't guarantee that it will work with Vista but it should in theory.

Go to http://www.divx.com/ and download the free package .. that fixed my .avi files playing with sound but no pix... I tried several other things which did not work ... I was getting the black screen with Irfanview, Realplayer, WMP 11.. all were repaired Smile

I will try this tomorrow.

Tonight, we have a great speaker at the Rocky Mountain SQL Server Users Group.

Thanks for the feedback.

Will let everyone know the results.

I had this same issue and searched for a codec fix forever. None of the current codecs would play an older avi (IV50) file. Installed this older package http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?strState=LIVE&ProductID=355&DwnldID=2846 and now all my avi (IV50) videos play and edit.

Will try this as soon as I get home! Sounds very encouraging. I tried six other sites that did not work.

If this works, I will send an e-mail to Pappa John's - not the pizza - a web site dedicated to Microsoft Movie Maker.

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/2846/eng/codinstl.exe&agr=N&ProductID=355&DwnldId=2846&strOSs=All&OSFullName=All%20Operating%20Systems&lang=eng

Great solution! Everyone With Microsoft Vista playing videos or using Movie Maker needs to download this!

THANK YOU!

Movie Maker will let me edit this, but will not let me convert it back to the same codec.

Anybody have a good AVI editing program to recommend?
