Internet Explorer Script Error Messages... Lots of them!

I seem to have run into a major problem and have found no solutions anywhere. I am running Windows XP and IE7. About a week ago, I started getting "Internet Explorer Script Error" messages, but then the rest is empty. No line numbers, etc. Clicking on YES or NO does nothing, so you click on the X to close, only to find out there are 30 other identical "script error" messages behind that one. This happens on webpages, clicking on links in Google, when trying to use Incredimail or games I downloaded from MSN, and with Norton Systemworks, among other programs. I get "error on page" messages when using IE7 as well. When I try to access Windows/Microsoft Update, I get a blank page. I also get a blank page and error message if I try to access user accounts on my computer. I am assuming there is a registry issue at play here, but have no idea how or what to fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

David

I've been getting the exact same errors. Two good examples are in IE7 for Help->About or Edit-Find. Also, can't access Hotmail Inbox.

It seems to be limited to IE7 on a non-Administrator user account.

There is also some fishy behavior with the latest Java (don't know if it is a coincidence or not). Right now on many user accounts the latest JRE cannot be verified (still says 1.0.9). On other accounts it verifies that 1.0.10 has been installed.

The reason I mention JRE is that the error boxes are all Java Script errors.

Unfortunately I have not yet found an answer. Anybody?

I am experiencing the same thing. I thought it was Incredimail at first, but then started noticing the same when I tried to modify users in control panel. When I click on user accounts I do get the same errors. So I figured it had something to so with IE 7's rendering engine. It is interesting that this happens on three user accounts, including the administrator, but my personal account from where I installed Incredimail and IE 7 does not have the problem. The Incredimail people have tried all sorts of things, but haven't been able to fix it yet. Perhaps this is a problem Microsoft should be fixing?

All four accounts are set up as administrators. So that doesn't appear to be the problem on my machine.

I am still under the assumption that this is a Windows XP or IE7 issue. I am leaning towards a registry issue (something got changed or deleted along the way or something). I have used Incredimail for years with no problem, so I don't think that is it.

I have multiple "administrator" accounts setup on the computer and they all have the same issues. I've reinstalled programs, ran different registry checking programs, etc., with no solution. I would hate to have to reinstall XP!!!

The same problem started yesterday for TWO of my User Accounts (My wife;s Administrator Account, and my daughter's limited account). Everything works OK on my Administrator Account. I've been runnin XP SP2 with IE7.

For the two "problem accounts," I'm seeing the "Internet Explorer Script Error" problem in the same places mentioned previously (ex. email from within Outlook, Control Panel-->User Accounts). We first discovered the issue when right-clicking on a music file within Media Player 11 and selecting "Find Album Info." Also, Windows Update leads to a Blank Screen when using the two problem accounts. I tried uninstalling the ~10 Windows Updates that were installed this morning, but it had no effect.

This is crippling our computer use, and I was dreading having to perform a Windows & Applications re-install this weekend. After finding this thread, I'm thinking it may not help.

I'm getting the same problems as described above. I haven't quite figured it out. The other weird thing is that certain other problems exist with my computer on top of the above mentioned.

EXAMPLES:

Opening the properties of My Computer > Hardware > Device Manager gives me a MMC error. More or less stating the devmgmt.mrc file is missing or some variant. The file is located in the system32 file like it should be but it still won't let me look in the Device Manager.

The second is trying a basic search feature through the START button. It leads to another error and won't perform any search task.

If anyone figures this out it'd be greatly appreciated. I think I am going to try reinstalling or even just repairing the Windows OS. Oh I use Home Edition SP2 also.

I think I figured out a solution. I uninstalled IE7 and everything seems to have gone back to normal. I say this because a program I couldn't install (since it used a window similar to IE7 to install) now installs. I also deleted a MSXML Pack 4 update also to try to fix the MMC error. But for the problem described it looks like a IE7 error which is easily corrected if you just uninstall. I use Firefox for browsing now since IE7 is no longer on the computert

I've gotten the same problem(s) as described above. I'm reluctant to uninstall IE7 because when I go to do so, it says that other programs installed afterwards may be affected. I've also noticed that AIM 6.0 is affected. When others type IMs, I cannot see what they've typed.

I'm using XP SP2.

Any help would be much appreciated.

OK- here's what happened when I uninstalled IE7, via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel using my (problem) Administrator account (and yes, I received the warning about several programs potentially having problems). My "Script Error" windows that I've encountered when searching for Album Info from within Media Player (this is my easiest "test case") were replaced with a different error message (something like "Services not Available" if I remember correctly). In addition, attempts to access Windows Update still failed. Nevertheless, I've reinstalled all updates and IE7 (using Windows Update from the one Administrator account that hasn't experienced any of the problems). I also attempted to create a NEW Administrator User Account, which ended up having the same problems as all of the others.

Has anyone attempted a complete XP OS re-install yet?

Some more details about my system and programs that may have updated in recent months:
XP Home Edition SP2
AVG Free Edition Antivirus
Firefox, Nero 6, Google Picasa2, Google Earth, Hauppage WinTV, Spybot, AdAware, ?

Looks like all we can do is complain. Wish I knew enough to help. I have exactly the same problem as you all. Wanted to check Services and got the IE Script Error. Tried to do a Restore and found all I got was an empty window with the Restore title. Tried to Repair my XP but it would not recognize my Admins password. Looks like IE7 has hosed this machine better than any virus could. I'll have to wait until Sunday to do a clean install. Hopefully I can still do that. Thank the Guru Gods for FireFox. Does anyone for real at MickeySoft ever read these forums?
Later,

After 2 months with this problem, I have found nothing that fixes it. I've even posted on other tech sites to see if anyone knows of a solution. I am hesitant to reinstall XP and make things even worse, but may have no choice. IE7 is to the point where it has become of no use to me. Windows Media Player won't even load any more. I am guessing it is ALMOST time to start copying all my personal files off to CD and wipe the drive clean.

The worst part is my wife can't play her computer games and she is ticked!! ARGH!!

Hi,

I have had a similar problem with IE7 and pervasive script errors, but only on one of 2 user accounts. I have spent hours trying to resolve the issue, I had concluded that since virtually all my issues appeared related to one of 2 user accounts, the registry permissions might be the real culprit. Currently both of the accounts are identified as computer administrator accounts....I have recently read some things suggesting that using an administrator account to browse the web leaves you all the more open to malicious software......but that is another issue for another day.

In the course of trying to troubleshoot an issue with getting Adobe Flashplayer to work appropriately on both user accounts, I found info in the Adobe Flashplayer Tech support pages about a Microsoft utility that administrators can use to manage registry entries on individual computers -- SubInACL. I am attaching a link to the page in Adobe support (don't know if this is some sort of copyright infringement). It explains where you can go to download the utility and then gives you a list of registry permission adjustments to enter into a cmd file. I had uninstalled IE 7 and returned to IE6 before I did this, but it may have an impact without uninstalling IE7 first.

Bottom line, Since I ran the utility I reinstalled IE 7 and have had NO script errors and all add ons and programs seem to run fine on both user accounts. I was even able to get the Adobe flash player to work appropriately on both accounts NOTE: to get the flash player to work correctly I had to run the SubInACL utility from both user accounts.

Something to consider trying......if nothing else has worked for you....

Good Luck.

Link is below (paste it into your browser if it won't work as a link):

Thanks, JohnR715,

This "Registry Reset" appears to have fixed ALL of my problems! (Although I only performed the operation 8 hours ago).

To everyone else struggling with these script errors, I recommend giving this a try.

JohnR715's advice worked.

Ran subinacl with the script on the Adobe page and it worked like a peach:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
