Questions about using Windows Workflow Engine in ISV app.

Hi,

We are a registered partner getting ready to launch our first application in August, 2006. We are looking at using WWF in the application. I see we can likely get GoLive licenses for the application for that time frame. I am wondering is there a limit to the number of installations we can distribute on the GoLive licenses? Will there be a general release date prior to Vista launch or will it be rolled in to Vista? Any other risk areas, (besides writing product code to "still wet" foundation code), that we may not have thought of?

PS, will WWF throw off the Veritest people for the "Verified for 2003 / XP" testing in the September time frame?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jim,

Please note that neither the License Terms in the setups nor the Go-Live License Terms allow redistribution. This means that before final release of Windows Workflow Foundation (as license terms currently are) you'd need to get your users to download and install Windows Workflow Foundation from msdn, and to get them to click through and accept the Go-Live License (online or mail-in).

As to other risk areas, please ensure that you have a solid migration plan to the final release bits once those become available. (See the go-live FAQ page for comments re this as well.)

Also, make sure that you adhere to the go-live license terms re PII etc. (info in go-live license terms as well as in go-live FAQ).

(I'm following up on the question re Veritest impact. I believe it shouldn't have an impact, but I'd like to verify that before claiming that to be the case. More info to come shortly.)

Info re release timeline:

Short answer:

  • Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is shipping in WinFX with Windows Vista (and at the same time for Windows 2003 and XP)and in synch with Microsoft Office "12" in H2 CY2006

Detailed answer:

  • Windows Vista and Office both have ship timeframes of H2 CY2006 and we can’t say exactly which will ship first.
  • WF is part of WinFX and will ship with Windows Vista, at the same time the WinFX Runtime Components will also be available for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
  • WF is a pre-requisite for Office Server 2007 and must be available prior to that release for installation from Windows Update.
  • Should Office Server 2007 ship before WinFX there would need to be an installer release that just contains the WF runtime.
  • There will only be one released version of WF so once WinFX ships the stand-alone WF install will be unnecessary.
  • If there is a separate version of workflow released in time for Office it will not be redistributable.
