Hi

I am building some sort of .Net code generator, using C# Express as well as SQL Express (for C# experience - I'm a VB.Net guy).

Now, quoting an excerpt from the terms and conditions on this promotion:

"All stories and projects become the property of Microsoft and will not be acknowledged or returned."

Does that mean that if I enter, I'll lose all rights to my project?

It means you are giving your Intellectual property away

I never trust these competitions

No, you do not lose rights to your project at all.

Microsoft becomes the owner of the story you submit about your work and "project" in this instance refers to an article and profile that is generated by MS if your submission is chosen.

here's my story....

win xp pro sp2 - IIS 5.1

I have installed sql express advanced and business toolkit for reports.

I enabled report server and configured the server.

I created a report and now I am trying to access it through my browser. I configured the report server, but I am unable to reach the reports

But when I go to : http://localhost/reports$SQLExpress

I get: "The page cannot be found"

Where / how do I find instructions to get from creating a simple report example against an existing database, to being able to view it from my browser ?

Well, I started with SQL Express just perhaps 2 weeks ago doing a number of other things in between. As it has been with any other system I tried to conquer in the past: VFP, Visual dBase, C++, C# the first impression is that nothing is working, the system is all wrong, that I've uncovered a lot of bugs, etc. Gradually one by one the procedures begin to execute, tables created, data begins to move from one app to another, you see the logic and music in the whole disign, you begin to like it and it starts working for you. I am still far away from the state of even modest proficiency, still struggling but I am already encouraged by what I have already accomplished.

I know that in order to get there I will have to ask more stupid questions, misquote things and get confused but the learning process for me is greatly facilitated, I should say, by great people, experts and moderators who read our posts: Mike, Cetin and many others. I am very grateful to them.

Andria1974, You say: No, you do not lose rights to your project at all.

But if You read the terms and condtions is written:

All stories and projects become the property of Microsoft and will not be acknowledged or returned. By submitting this project, you signify your acceptance of these official rules and agree to grant to Microsoft a royalty free, non-exclusive, perpetual worldwide license to reproduce, modify, prepare derivative works and otherwise use and publicly display your submission in any and all media in connection with the operation of their Internet businesses (including, without limitation, all Microsoft Services) without additional compensation. Microsoft will have the right to assign, transfer or sublicense this license.

Here's my Sql Express story:

I flat does NOT work! I cannot get sql express to deploy to IIS at all. I have spent over a 2 weeks following a zillion tips, tricks, ideas, thoughts, etc from MSDN forums, google searches, blogs,...you name it. It does NOT work except within Visual Studio. Deploy=Dead.

Sql Express is supposed to easily deploy? Who came up with that line?

On Saving Time.
It was a cold and rainy December night in Canada...throwing caution to the wind, I stepped out of my computer nerd \ I.T. guy label so rudely applied by the women in the accounting department and downloaded SQL Server Express with the Advanced Features. Knowing full well that the documentation strongly suggested that I un-install anything and everything related to .NET prior to the install. The 240,261 KB downloading in mere seconds, I suddenly realized that hesitation kills. Without a further thought or care and with the strength and nobility of my grade 8 Level 29 Paladin, I double clicked a mighty double click.
Installed smoothly and I was for a short moment in time a "non follower" of software installation recommendations and saved 4 to 5 hours un-installing, downloading and re-installing all my .NET stuff. Perhaps future epochs may follow should this story be deemed worthy of aforementioned prize.............

[This post ends in heavy sarcasm and was written while the author was stressed. It has since been corrected for blatant spelling and grammatical errors by the author]

Here is a story for you. Back in 2003, I started working for a furniture distributor as a "technical assistant" which meant I handled most of the phone calls with PayPal and Dell and got to sell stuff on eBay. At the end of the summer, I had to go start school and so I left with the knowledge that I could always go back when I needed a job. Flash forward to 2006. I started back to the warehouse to bring the Web Sales department back to life. I implemented eBay Blackthorne and started learning the world of databases as simple .mdb files that did not work the way you thought they would. Then in December, I officially earned the title Office DBA when I worked with the UPS guy to make UPS WorldShip work with my database so that it imports addresses from my database by a keyed import. Now that that is working I am finding I need to learn SQL as fast as possible so that we can finally unify all of our information to one location and still have the Blackthorne database a mdb file so that it can capture all of the information that it needs to make Blackthorne work. This means that I have to work fast to keep up with the demands at work and get SQL Server Express working for me. Then when I get the funding to update the office, I will finally be able to put in the full server and then I get to try my hand as a programmer writing new apps so that we can track all of our data with one application, not seven. This way if we go through with the partnership I will have an infrastructure that can be used and worked with.

Oh yeah. I am only 18.

Sorry about the arrogance, it was actully ment as a stressed out form of sarcasm. I am stressing over the fact that I am not really a DBA. I am a hardware guy and having to learn SQL and all of that (custom apps and everything) is stressing me out... I am getting set to do about 15 different types of jobs at work and I still have my obligations to my voulenteering position with my old elementary school. On top of that I am trying to remember that my crappy GPA is the biggest problem I have right now and it is the last thing on my to do list... the actual mindset of the post is not "Oh look at me" it is actually a "Please shoot me cause I am getting into more then I really have time for" I am not a programer and I did not write my first program until this year. I am doing this all fly by night and would have no problem if someone just decided to put me out of my stress and knock me out for three weeks.

Sorry again for writing when I am stressed it just happens sometimes.

As far as the editing goes the post may still benefit from a round or two, and a style expert may find something to chew on.

However, if MS can make SQLEXPRESS accessible to even people on this literacy level it makes it a REAL success story! Microsoft's.

Like I said I am stressed out by having to give myself a crash course in programing and SQL. by trade I don't do those kinds of things I just build the computers and make them work. I don't design new interfaces or work on databases so my "success story" is the fact that I am trying to figure this out. Then, mabey, in 6 months I can watch it all work instead of blow up. cause so far SQL Express wont even install on my laptop correctly... mabey it has something to do with Office 2007 having a different .chm then it is looking for.
