Error creating team project with RTM

I am having trouble creating a team project with the RTM of TFS from a client machine. I can create a team project from the server itself (logged in as myself), just not from my machine (also logged in as myself). My machine is XP Pro and I have Windows Firewall disabled.

I have tried deleting my cache directory several times as well as uninstalling/reinstalling Team Explorer on my machine.

I can also navigate to the following link successfully. I'm not sure it is related but I have seen a couple of posts suggesting to try out the url.

http://<server>:8080/WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ClientService.asmx?wsdl

By looking at the log file, it seems like the connectivity with server was lost while PCW was running and to be specific while it was trying to create WITs (work item types).

I have tried the creation probably 20 - 30 times, after trying different things, but it always encounters the same exception at the same place. I would think that a network issue would present itself as failing at different points of the project creation.

A ping also consistently comes back. Is there something specific with network setup I should look at.

After a little more messing around, I can successfully create a project on the server machine and from another client machine. So it appears to just be a problem with my machine. I have tried reinstalling and uninstalling the client as well as wiping out the cache directory.

Any ideas?

This is interesting. The only thing that comes to my mind right now is that you may have some old WorkItem dlls in your <drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies, which could be causing the problem. I have noticed some times uninstall/reinstall does not help fixing this issue.

Both the client that worked and my machine were clean installs, neither had a beta or rc on them. I just checked the files in <drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\Private Assemblies on both machines, the client that works and mine, and they are identical.

You may try adding another user to your machine and log on to your machine with that user and try creating project to see if there is any issue with your current user profile before trying formatting option.

Another way of doing this would be to log on to your machine using machine 'Administrator' account, delete your AD user profile under Documents and Settings, and then log on using your AD account to see if this fixes the problem.

I had another user (the one that can create projects from his machine) log in to my machine and try creating a project. It failed with the exact same error. The two machines that I can create projects on are win2003 machines where as my machine is windows xp. I have windows firewall disabled so I wouldn't think it has something to do with ports being blocked but at this point, who knows.

I turned on tracing on the server to see if I could figure anything out from it. The first trace file below is from when I try to create a project from my machine, which fails. The second is the same section from creating a project from another machine where project creation succeeds. Any ideas would be very appreciated at this point. I am pulling my hair out. I wouldn't worry about it if I knew that everything else except project creation would work ok on my machine. My worry is that I am going to run into other problems when working with projects already created.

Are you still having this issue?

Thanks for sending the trace information. By looking at the trace, it seems like it failed while trying to retrieve metadata cache information. I do not know if you have already tried deleting the cache and then creating a project. If you are still having this issue and deleting cache does not help then I will get some developer to further look into this issue.

Yes and no. I thought I would just forget about it and create projects from another machine when I needed to. Then, when getting a project from tfs source control, it started bombing out half way through (I don't remember the exact error now, I think it was invalid request string or something like that). After I tried reloading my machine I still had both problems.

So, I tried looking to see if it might be a network issue. I tried a different network connection in the office. Same problem. Then I tried using wireless from home and vpning into the office network... it worked! I then tried using a pcmcia card for my network connection instead of my on board nic... it worked!

I then had hp come out and replace my mother board because I thought maybe there was a problem with the on board nic. This didn't fix anything, same problem. Anytime I use the on board nic, it has problems. So, for the time being, I have just been using wireless or a different nic.

Any ideas about what could be causing this problem with the on board nic? Very strange...
