How do I download Team Foundation Server (Full) ?

I have an MSDN subscription (Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Architects). When I go to subscriber downloads, under "Team Foundation Server", there are two products listed:

  1. Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server Trial Edition (English)
  2. Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition (English)

How do I get the full version of TFS?

Thanks

After spending many days trying to figure out this, I've finally understood...

First of all, let's get one thing straight.

Regardless of you MSDN subscription level and/or your Certified Partner level.

The Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server prodcut is **NOT** going to be available for download via the MSDN web site.

Of course, this is...as of this writting, who know's if Microsoft might change their minds later on but for now, you will need to buy this product from a reseller.

What's also important to understand here is that the Team Foundation Server product will be license like any other Server product. What this means is that:

1) You will need to purchase the product.
2) You will need to purchase additionnal CALs.

Another important thing about Team Foundation Server is that it comes in two flavors!
- workgroup Edition
- Full version

The workgroup Edition, oddly enough, doesn't use any CALs *but* is limited to 5 users. This is ideal for companies that aren't planing on having more the 5 people connecting to TFS.

As for the Full version, like I said, you will have to purchase it.
The price is the following:
$2,799.00 US for the product.
Then each additional CALs are $391.00 US for user CALs or device.

Hope this helps!
Vince

From the recent TFS launch event in our town (Houston), it was announced that TFS - Standard Edition would be available May 1. My presumption was that it would be available through MSDN Subscriptions, but the newest listings appear to be various language variants.

Hopefully, someone from MS will respond to this thread.

The answer Vince provided is accurate. Team Foundation Server "Standard Edition" is not available for download from MSDN Subscriber Downloads. Only the Workgroup Edition is part of the Premium Subscription. The Trial Edition is provided for ease of access, and can be upgraded to "Standard Edition" once you obtain a product key.

Thank you, for your clear and concise answer! I have spent far too much time browsing through an endless loop of pages on Microsoft's website trying to figure out how to get the full version.

Just one more question: If I understand correctly, if a development shop purchases the full version of TFS for $2799, and then purchases one of the premium MSDN subscriptions for every developer (Suite, Architect, Developer, or Tester), the shop would STILL need to purchase a $359 CAL for every developer. Is this correct?

In my opinion, the marketing and product information on microsoft.com for Team Foundation Server is extremely misleading, and I can't understand why you would make it so hard to learn how to purchase the product. Any information found seems to be, at best, ambiguous. During the research process, I called MSDN support, and the representative I spoke with insisted that Team System is still in beta.

Anyways, thank you providing this much sought after information in an easy to understand format!

I'm not with MS, but I believe the answer is no. I recall from MS material that a Team Foundation Server CAL is included with Team Suite products.

(The rest of this reply is just further boring feedback for MS types... (smile). )

Attending the recent Team Foundation Server launch event clarified a number of topics, but presenters did not appear to have a definitive, single answer to acquiring the product at that time (other than by purchase). Even at Mix06, I was able to finally locate and exchange emails with a TFS manager remotely, but based on people's lack of familiarity with TFS, it appears to be a niche product along for the ride with Team Suite.

As I have been following this product since January, it has been puzzling which versions are available and when, with its ownership requirements tangled with its close association with Team Suite in the literature. Particularly misleading was the availability of a Trial Edition and a WorkGroup Edition, plus various betas, etc. through the MSDN Subcriber channel, then the Standard Edition is not available there.

In fairness, there is a migration file from the Trial Edition to a "non-trial" version (I understand), and an "upgrade to RTM version" file through the Subscriber channel.

I was told yesterday by Partnership Support that Gold Certified Partners have access to a TFS download. Certified Partners (with ISV competency) will get their TFS copy by disc shipment.

It wasn't clear whether it was the workgroup or full version being referenced.

In the July disc shipment to Certified (ISV Competency) and Gold Partners, Microsoft sent a desc containing Team Foundation Server Standard Edition. Due to a publishing mistake, the disc does not actually contain TFS, but it does have a valid TFS Standard product key sticker on its CD sleeve. If you download the Trial Edition, you can unlock it to be a Standard Edition using that key. I've done it and it works. So essentially, the full version of TFS Standard is available online.

The Partnership Regional Support Center assured me that the corrected TFS Standard disc would be in the August disc shipment, or alternatively you can request it immediately, in which case they say they can get it to you "within 10 days".
