File in use .mpp is locked for editing
Hi,
We're using TFS RTM
We're experiencing a really annoying problem which is, when someone closes and saves a MS Project document to the Team Foundation Portal no one else can open it for editing, we get a message
File in use
*.mpp is locked for editing
There are a couple of other posts which refer to this as well

Is anyone from Microsoft aware of this issue and if they are when will it get sorted as this is making really hard work of using this part of TFS
Cheers.

This is my understanding of the issue and that it is a known issue for WSS. Not sure all my statements are technically and exactly correct but that is the bas
There is an issue in Windows SharePoint Services that is not related to TFS but all uses of WSS (not sure about SPS).
When opening an Office Document from WSS in 'Open for Edit' it creates a short term lock. This lock lasts for 3 minutes (kind of). As long as you have the document open for Edit the WSS should get a ping from the Office application telling it the document is still open and thus locked.
Now- one would think when you close the document WSS would release the lock. And it should but WSS has a known issue that is is not responding to this or is not receiving this event. Thus it waits until it has not received a 'Open for Edit' ping for 10 minutes and releases the lock.
So... after you open an Office Document for edit from the SharePoint Portal and close it. It will continue to appear to be locked for edit for 6-10 minutes before anyone can edit again (even the same user).
Hi Michael,
Thanks for your post. I understand your explanation and now see why documents are 'locked' for about 10 mins. You also say that it is a known issue. When the hell will Microsoft pull there finger out and sort it out!
I get so frustrated when products are released onto the market and they just don't work the way you expect them to!
Right, I'm of to have a cup of tea and think about the weekend!
It has been a year, and this problem is still there, nice Microsoft nice.
But it is normal to Microsoft, for example, there is a bug in Exchange server installed on a NT 4 Domain controller, it takes the server 20 min to restart, the bug was introduced back in 1998 I think and fixed in SP 2 for Win 2003 in 2007 :-)
When you create a new project in TFS, it adds a Development Project Plan.mpp file to the document library. Even the first time opening this document, I was unable to save it.
